Tracking Devices - yay or nay?
I had a conversation with a fellow overlander who is vehemently against having a tracking unit installed in his 4x4, and advises that any overlanding vehicle should not have one installed.
His reasons - that inevitably the device, specifically the battery. will one day pack up leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere (the place we all enjoy travelling too!)
Any thoughts/opinions on this?
Last time i checked, and touch wood, the patrols don't have the theft problems of say a 76 LC or hilux.

Re: Tracking Devices - yay or nay?
I've had exactly that happen to my Trol three weeks ago. Battery died and had to be replaced because of a faulty tracking magody that was draining it

Re: Tracking Devices - yay or nay?
There is no insurance benefit for me in having a tracking device installed.

dave the only reason to put one in is if your insurance insists on it and patrols are not really up for it like a frottunna or a m5 i took mine out gave me hassles

I'm with tuffstuff and apparently no need for a tracking unit with them.
forgot to mention that this friends runs a fitment centre - says he sees plenty issues with these tracking devices.

Re: Tracking Devices - yay or nay?
I have just been through the exercise of re-insuring my troll...
If I put a tracker in the Troll it would have brought the premium down by R78.00 only...
The cheapest quality tracker package that I could find was R170.00 odd ront...
Even if the price made fiscal sense, the insurance oke told me out right that as a Patrol owner, I should not even bother with a tracker as our cars are not even taken into account by the Actuaries when working out the risk profiles on insuring SUV's.
And that is over and above the tech issues that may creep in...
I say stay away!

If the thief can afford to put in the petrol to get across the border .... or has the time to get the diesel up past 130 Km/h... good luck to him...

Ek ry waar die tracking mense of boewe nie kan kom nie.
Die tracking units maak beslis n battery dood oor n paar dae as jy nie start nie.
