I want to remove the "box" above the radio, which I then want to modify to fit a VHF radio in the area.
How do I get that "box" out of the console?

Zantus, have you got a manual?
If not, get hold of Kobus (Herrie), he has the Nissan factory manual on CD...

Re: Stripping centre console
Just above the recycle internal air button and the temp control button, sort of out of sight on your photo, there are 2 philips screws that need to be removed first. then with a flat screw driver, on about the same level on the left and right side of the black part of the plastic that meets with the grey plastic, you should find a small ( sometimes difficult to see) slot to place the flat screw driver into. Gently pry the black plastic part off. It is just held in with clips. It might take a bit of patience but, I have done it on mine a few times. once the panel is loose be careful as you need to unplug the plugs for the sub tank, demister, and antennae button. After this you will see some more phillips screws on each side of the radio. this will allow you to remove the radio and top " box". Then you can remove the screws that hold the top " Box" in place.
Refit is just in reverse... but putting the black plastic panel back might take one or 2 attempts to get the holes lined up correctly.
I fitted my VHF into the top box. I did have to cut up the box though, but it made for a neat finish when fitted.
Good luck !!
