Nisan Patrol - 1996 Model

Hi All

I recently purchased a Nissan Patrol 1996 model with +-170000 on the clock. It is leaking water and over-heating as a result. I want to send the car down to Pretoria to have the Carburetor replaced with a fuel injector but I need to have the leak fixed first.

Where, near Cape Town (Durbanville), can I have this leak repaired? Does anybody know of a reliable mechanic? I don't want to take it to just any mechanic.

On another note, the car jerks once you enter the high rev zone. Do you suspect that replacing the fuel filter might solve this problem?

Djaak, PM Tour de Frans (AKA Frans Fourie). He is a very good macchie, in cape town. He could probably advise you on the fuel injection mod you are contemplating, but personally I would just get the carb sorted. Off course it depends on what you want to use the car for, but I doubt any aftermarket fuel injection will ever be as reliable as the factory carb. And when they are well sorted, they work pretty well.

Where is your water leak? if it is your radiator, it probably makes more sense to just replace your radiator. I am actually busy doing that as we speak.

The standard carb if set up properly is very good, and kits are still available. I have had mine on 4-gas analisers, and it delivers results similar to what is expected of fuel injection, so save that money and spend it on getting your overheating sorted.

I agree with peter keep the carb sort out as per nissan manual with all vacuum pipes working ect , do a pressure test on water sysrem and at 2000000 km you need to look at doing viskus and waterpump you can get all those bits from masterparrts in belville
If carb is really stuffed look at a wweber as aa last resort . There are guys that did it on the forum and are very happy
If you want a realiable patrol don't fiddle to much the japs know what they do
But peter is getting a radiator build so speak to him about costs ......make sure your aircon one is not blocked and not letting air in

Thanks for all the advice! Waardeer dit! Have come to notice that most of the pipes will need replacing and there are thousands of little things that have not been looked after by the previous owner. The electronics are having a field day and at the moment it's a gamble everytime I want to start her... Both brand new batteries drain overnight so somewhere something is eating electricity for no reason whatsoever! Found one or two reputable guys to have a look at her and will do that first thing in Jan. You may just have convinced me to not put in a fuel injector.

I saw at Rust de Winter an incident where a Land Cruiser 80 lost power on a VERY steep downhil due to, according to speculation, the weber not able to function at that inclination. Is that possible, that the float or whatever cannot/is not designed to operate under such conditions. Was a messy affair and the guy bounced downward due to trying to brake and just sliding down. The standard carb is designed to function as a 4x4 carb in 4x4 conditions.

Which brings the next question, in such an event just leave the car in gear and clutch out? Engine should still provide the resistance?

I have fitted a larger custom radiator and it has made a marked differance. My water pump lasted 340 km, and i got the new one from Beliville Master Parts. My viscous coupling after 385k km is still going strong. I also replace the hoses after 60k km just to be sure. For the radiator I have used a local supplier in Pretoria - Silverton.

I recieved my new costom-built (copper) radiator this afternoon. Will post some pictures sometime, but effectively they used my old top and bottom plates (with the mounting points on) and matched the pipes exactly so it just bolted straight in, but the core is now as thick as the radiator (probably 30-40% thicker than it used to be), and I am hopeful that my overheating problems are at an end.

That plus cleaning and refurbishing my A/C condensor cost me just R3272, and it looks like a beautiful quality job.

Djaak, take note though that there are a number of other areas you may be losing water from, and you need to actually trace the leaks or do a pressure test. Examples are the heater radiator and pipework as well as the pipework under the intake manifold. Some models even have a heat exchanger/oil cooler on the side of the block which could potentially leak.
