Front diff/hubs checked out in Cape Town
Hi Guys
I recently discovered my hubs are not engaging correctly in 4x4. I think it's the right front, but then again my drive-train knowledge is limited and it could actually be the front diff. Who can I take it to in Cape Town to have checked out?
Thank you
John

Re: Front diff/hubs checked out in Cape Town
Should be easy to test, jack the front up and with the transfercase in 2H turn the front diff prop shaft. the hubs should lock and the wheels should turn, a further test could be to get someone to hold the one wheel, turning the prop shaft should then turn the other wheel and vice versa. If this does not happen it means the hub did not lock on that wheel.
It is a test without load but should give an indication and could be used to check reverse as well.

Re: Front diff/hubs checked out in Cape Town
If you are turning the front propshaft by hand with the front wheels jacked up the autohubs should engage. If you want to go through the exercise in 4H you would have to lift at least one rear wheel as well, otherwise you won't be able to rotate the front propshaft much by hand.ricster wrote:I may be wrong here... but shouldn't you have it in 4H and not 2H.....
JohnBoy, check that both your autohubs are securely set to the same setting (i.e. both to "LOCK" or both to "AUTO).
I don't know much about the workshops in the Cape, other than that I have heard of JB Auto...

Re: Front diff/hubs checked out in Cape Town
Thanks for the 2h , 4h reply Gerrit.
It's actually a good exercise for anyone to do to understand how the auto hubs work. As soon as there is power on the propshaft (i.e. you turn it by had), the diff turns the drive/ side shaft turns and the hubs lock. If you then stop and turn the prop in the other direction the hub will unlock, normally a click and then lock for the reverse direction. And this is iffy part if you get into a situation where you need to rock the car and do it with plenty of power, it lock, unlocks, locks in reverse unlock for fwd, lock for fwd constantly so when offorad rather just lock them.

Is this not when the PATROl manne will get out the wheel spanner and MANUAL lock the hubs .. ?? but I do assume ther are still couple of "greens" amongst PATROL fraternity that doe not know this [I was 'dunno' on this till last year
