What rating recovery strap?

Post by Traveler »

I am busy having a recovery rope/strap made 15m in length for my Patrol. We know it is a heavy beast, and when it gets stuck you need serious muscle to get it out again. Also handy to recovery everything else that gets stuck.

What rating strap would you recommend for the Patrol??

About 12T load capacity, I think. That is the kinetic rope I bought, but have not used up to now.

If we are talking about a "normal" recovery strap (as opposed to a kinetic strap/rope), then I guess you need not be concerned about getting something with too high a rating, except that it must still fit in the car soewhere.

On the other hand, the rating need possibly not be as severe as a kinetic strap's, as momentum should not play a role (although with such a long strap it will be difficult to exclude it completely), and it would certainly be better to break the strap than to break the recovery points?

Also remember that the commercial straps usually used as tow-straps are intended for lifting, and as such have a 3x safety factor. In other words, it should be able to handle three times the load on the label.

I would think 5-10tons?

I have a kinetic rope which is still in the bag that I purchased in about 8 years ago. Never used it, and would rather never use it.

Where possible I always use a bridal; that is why I want to add another recovery hook on the front to make a bridal setup possible.

On the rear I'll add 2 points so I can use a bridal setup for rear recoveries as well. I prefer soft setups with the minimum amount of steel (shackles).

I always make the bridal the "weakest" point in the setup. So the bridal with have the lowest rating of all the equipment in the setup.

I have a 6m strap which is rated at 10 tons. And this 15m I am having made up at 12tons (advice I got from Securetech).

On that basis,

I have however often wondered whether it would not be better to use a kinetic rope in cases where such a long length is required, but to use it in the same manner that one would normally use a normal tow strap, in other words without inducing momentum?

I also wonder whether a kinetic rope would work better as a tow rope in thick sand?

Unfortunately a kinetic rope does work better in thick sand than a tow rope/strap.
