SWIVEL HUB, KINGPIN,CV JOINT,OIL SEALS

The front axle knuckle is sealed from the axle oil and is lubricated by grease. This has to be repacked at 40000 km intervals as well as far as I know (Molybdenum disulphide lithium soap base grease is recommended here as well.)
The front axle has Birfield joints, which is a type of CV joint[/quote]

Gerrit, thx again for all your technical advise !!!!!much appreciated.
What do they mean by repacking the axle knuckles, does it just need to be pumped full of grease or do you have to strip and repack the knuckles.

Gerrit, I have downloaded the workshop manual from the Oz site.
Some questions.
There it states that when greasing the axle joint in the chassis and maintenance section.
Drain approx 2 lt of diff. oil
Remove knuclkle spindle with flat surface portion facing upwards
Slightly pull out axle and repack joint with grease

My question now is ,why the oil there ? So it shows the swivel pin housing is filled with oil and the cv is packed with grease,(like a defender) is it so?

Grease.
I also found in the maintenace section that the Troll only have 6 nipples , 3 on front and 3 on rear prop shaft. There is nothing on the ball joints and tie rod ends.

Koos, I have not opened my front axle yet, but the way I understand it there is an oil seal between the axle housing and the steering knuckle that keeps the oil on the axle housing side and the grease on the steering knuckle side. The Birfield joints (CVs) and the steering knuckle bearings are both lubricated by grease as far as I know. I think the design is very similar to the Land Cruiser front axle.

I think the reason why the manual tells you to drain some axle oil is to ensure that the oil level in the axle drops below the height of the oil seal mentioned above. This is necessary, because the Birfield joint with sideshaft attached has to be pulled slightly out of the axle housing in order to repack it with grease. This disturbs the oil seal and could lead to oil leaking out of the axle housing unless the level is lower than the seal.

It seems as though all the steering joints have sealed bearings. There are supposed to be greasing points on each of the propeller shaft universals and also on the slip joints (six in total, as you said), but on my Patrol there are only grease fittings on the slip joints. The universals seem to have sealed bearings  . They seem to be the original parts, have done 220000 km and still seem in excellent condition.
