Value for money

Post by Izak »

I am thinking of buying an off road trailer. (One of the many stupid things I did in my life was selling the Venter Bushbaby) Looking at the prices of the "name brands", Conqueror, Desert Wolf ext I get this burning sensation there where I sit on.

I bought my Patrol with 118000 Km on nearly 3 years ago for R160 000. That included a 3liter diesel motor, 5 tyres, 7 seats. 2 diffs and a gearbox, brakes, dual battery ect ect ect.... Now to buy a second hand Desert Wolf trailer or Conqueror that I like will also set me back R 160 000 second hand.

A very nice Bushbaby with rooftop tent and awnings ect will set me back R 40 000, negotiable. For another R10 000 I can custom make that Venter to my heart desire.

The point I am trying to make is that these off road trailers and caravans are ridiculously over priced, very nice, but overpriced.

Hi Izak,

Agree with your sentiments; I bought a new Bushbaby trailer at an outdoorshow in 1998 for R14000.00... a joke compared to current prices. I have since added a few items to it at a fraction of current prices and before the kitted out trailer thing became fashionable and subsequently stupidly priced.

I have got good value out of it and it works for me... have added a circus tent to it and a few mods as per pics below... all in all I estimate that I have spent about R20k on this trailer to to date including purchase price... compare that to current prices and I smile too much1

If you opt for a "Venter Schlenter" and dependent on how much spare time you have you could always customize it a bit to suit your needs better... read through this series of posts for some ideas:

I like the look the Wildebees but again, and I am assuming here, that is in the region of R80000??

The attached Venter comes with all those tents, gas bottles ect.

A quick budget is about R 1000 for water tanks fitted underneath, R 2000 for a electrical Box and wires plus then another R1500 for battery. The Venter mudguard mounted kitchen is R2100.

I had a look at the link to Venters on the Community forum and it is amazing what those guys did with their Bushbaby's.

Now to speak to Swambo the purse bearer. :helpsign:
