Malcolm van Coller (MVcoller) has fitted a Lexus motor and box into his GQ. However the gearbox ratios are not ideal, and he is considering changing the diff ratios to compensate.

Malcolm is already on his third auto box with his Lexus - the gearbox oil cooler is the big problem.

Hi Kobus

This is an interesting question. If doing an engine conversion, whether one should replace gearbox to be native to the enginge or stick with the gearbox that is native to the drivetrain.
Wimpie replaced the enginve and gearbox with Lexus, whrereas for my car I kept the Patrol manual gearbox. I am happy with my gear ratios.
I don't undersgtand much of the potential implications such as the oil cooling in the gearbox, but my sense is that the Patrol gearbox was made to drive a 3 ton vehicle while the Lexus gearbox may take strain that it was not meant for. Given the "take no prisoners" way in which Wimpie drives, it will be interesting to see how long the Lexus gearbox lasts.

Malcolm has the lexus autoboxes and they need a proper oil cooler too save the gearbox.

hi

omdat my 4.5 auto was is daar n olie cooler deur die radiator , dan het hy n olie cooler gehad wat ekstra is vir die auto boks. die front cut het n hidroliese fan en daar het ek my 3de klein radiator gebruik om sy olie af te koel. die verkoeling pla my nie te erg nie. wat in my gedagtis is die transfer van die surf. of hy gaan hou sal ek sien. mense wat ek mee gesels het oor die ratkas se ek gaan hom nie sommer stukkend ry nie (as die verkoeling reg is en sintetiese auto olie ) of hulle reg is sal ons maar moet sien. malcolm kan my kontak ek het nog die oorspronklike olie cooler van die lexus ratkas wat saam met die frontcut gekom het as hy nie n olie cooler radiator op het nie. die hindernis is in lae rat 1ste rat gedoen. die ander voertuig wat daar uit is was n toyota land cruiser met n lexus motor op handrat ratkas.

of die modifikasie gaan hou sal ek moet sien - lexus se kw en wringkrag op papier is meer as die patrol se ne. sodra alles reg is word hy gedino. op die stadium is hy nog op die verstelling soos in japan op sy computer boks was.

Wimpie,

Dankie vir jou aanbod van hulp.

My groot probleem op my oorspronklike autobox was die feit dat dit 'n 3 spoed ratkas was, so 3e rat was 'n 1 tot 1 verhouding. Dit het 1e en 2e en selfs 3e baie lam gemaak, veral as ek tou. As ek 'n bulte gevang het op 100kph, moes ek ook afkom tot 70 om 2e te kom haak, en 30 om terug te gaan 1e toe. Dit was 'n nagmerrie. Met die overdrive in 3e kon ek nie op 'n gelyk pad 120 kph handhaaf as ek tou nie, moes heeltyd terug gaan 3e toe, spoed op bou tot by 120, en dan weer in overdrive ingaan. Op 140 was hy wel gelukkig en kon sy spoed hou in OD, maar jy kan nie op daai spoed tou nie!!

Toe ons die Lexus ratkas insit, (wat 'n Asian ratkas is, en deur Nissan, Toyota en Lexus gebruik word) was die probleem (wat ek uitgevind het na die 2e ratkas uitgebrand het), dat hy nie reg opgestel was on in 1e rat weg te trek nie. Ek het die heeltyd in 2e weggetrek! Geen wonder hy het to 70 of 80kph gehaal in die rat waarin ek weggetrek het nie!

Ons het uitgevind dat die bestaande verkoeling deur die Nissan se radiator ook nie voldoende is nie, veral met die hoer werkverrigting van die V8 enjin nie, so ons het nou 'n oordentelike olie verkoeler vir die ratkas agter die voor bumper ingesit, met gate in die bumper en al.

Die ratkaste het so warm geword dat die tonnel my been gebrand het en ek heatshields moes insit. Die aircon moes ook heeltyd hardloop sodat mens in die voertuig kon leef. Gelukkig is die Lexus ratkaste goedkoop teen R1500 per ratkas. En dit was elke keer die vorentoe clutches was uitgebrand het en begin gly het. Reverse werk elke keer steeds soos 'n bom.

Maar ek het ook nou 'n Surf transfer inlaat sit met sy bypassende outo ratkas (wat ook 'n Asian is). Waar die Nissan se lae strek 1 tot 2 verhoudoing het, het die Surf 'n 1 to 2.5 verouding, wat beter in veldwerk behoort te werk.

hi malcolm

ek het die hitte gevoel teen my been. ek gaan ook oorswaai na sintetiese auto olie- afbreek punt baie hoer en kan die hitte beter hanteer. wat ek anders in die v8 gevoel het teenoor die 4.5 is dat die v8 in sy over drive 120km/uur hou teen 2400rev/min waar die 4.5 moes terug gaan na 3de rat toe en dan weer opbou vir 120km om dan weer na overdrive te gaan om net weer spoed te verloor . dit was sonder n sleepwa. met n sleepwa moes ek 3de bly en 100km/uur sukkel om te kry . my brandstof verbruik sal ek nog moet uitwerk as die uitlaat wat nog lek reg is. ek glo ook as die voertuig gedino en my chip op is hy nog beter sal wees. ek hoop net ek het nie die probleem met die ratkas wat jy het nie. my oorspronklike olie koeler van die ou ratkas is groter as die lexus se ne dit is hoekom ek hom gehou het.

Wimpie -- having just blown up my engine for the second time, I am quite interested. see you replaced your engine with a Lexus V8, which I was also thinking of, but would prefer to stay original. Why did you replace the engine in the first place (i.e what was wrong with it/motivated the change?) See it has done about 200 000 km which is similar to mine...so where are you and how much do you want? don't really need the box,. just the motor.Would you either reply here or give me a call on 083 284 7869.
