Extra fuel tank 2004 Patrol
I'm looking for an extra fuel tank for my 04 Patrol 3.0 TDi. This is a Norwegian Patrol, so I have no sub tank fitted from factory. Would like a better range, so I though I should look into fitting a second tank and connect with a fuel pump. Any used tanks for sale out there? Or info on who could sell me a new one for a reasonable price. I'll be in Cape Town area for about a week before driving north towards Europe.

Re: Extra fuel tank 2004 Patrol
Hi Espen
There is a firm up in Joburg called Northern offroad that specialises in long range fuel tanks.
http://www.northernoffroad.com/
However if you want to do a long overland trip I would have the tank fitted long before I intend to depart.
I've heard of numerous teething problems experienced by customers with after market tanks. You don't want to deal with a leaking fuel tank when in the middle of nowhere.
If I as in your position and your departure date cannot be postponed, I would rather settle with a bunch of jerry cans.

Hi Espen
Another point I just thought of,
Do you know what diesel grade your vehicle can cope with?
European manufactured vehicles generally don't cope well with dirty fuel. And you are bound to get dirty fuel the further North you travel.
If you have not done so yet, you may ant to consider an after market fuel filter?

Re: Extra fuel tank 2004 Patrol
Elfen, the Northern Offroad tank that Alex mentions replaces the existing tank, and is 140l capacity.
However, a number of people on this forum have had problems with this tank, as it tends to crack on the mountings. In my opinion Stainless steel is not the ideal material for fuel tanks. Alex it doesn't help having the tank fitted long before the time, as this is mostly a metal fatigue issue.
LA Sport in Centurion have a supplier who makes a tank that fits where the sub-tank would fit, and that hangs on straps rather than having the mountings welded to the tank. I know Wilfred Moore has this tank fitted, and I believe Grant also has it. This is a good tank and can be recommended.

Thanks for the reply. I've been on the road for 2 years driving from Alaska to Ushuaia in Argentina, and shipped over from Buenos Aires to PE a couple of weeks ago. Postponing the departure from Cape Town (where I am now) is not really an option, so I have to be confident about the quality. I have a Long Ranger replacement tank in the back (145 l), and that is working perfectly. And as an answer to your second comment, I cant really fit a second fuelfilter to my fuel line without adding a second lift pump. This can be a little complicated for the zd30 engine. The standard fuelpump cant take more restriction in the fuel line. My idea was to fit a really good filter to the second fuel tank, and then fill suspicious fuel only in that tank.
Thanks!
Espen

I already have the 1450 liter Long Ranger mounted in the back (replaced factory fuel tank). Would you consider to sell only the 60 liter????? What brand is this? (I think I remember the tanks from Long Ranger being 145 + 75)

Thanks for your answer. I think for now that Centurion is a little too far away.... Unless there is a LA Sport in Cape Town that could have one sent down?
