Hi guys
I have a 2006 diesel Patrol - a 4.2 non turbo. It's a developing markets version - no luxuries, no extras. The rear axle has drum brakes.
After investigating a heavy vibration above 70kmph, we noticed that the nose of the diff pinion where it meets the rear drive shaft was visibly bouncing up and down.
Nissan want over 2,300euros for a new diff!!
Does anyone have any good ideas? Machine a new shaft, perhaps?
Help! Bent diff pinion?

Re: Help! Bent diff pinion?
Mark, do you know if it is the "companion flange" (The flange the u-joint bolts onto), or the pinion shaft itself?
I would definately start by looking for second-hand parts, but if you can't find:
If it is the pinion shaft itself, there are a number of companies, primarily in Aus, that manufacture crownwheel & pinion sets, perhaps they may even be able to provide you with second-hand ones that they have replaced with their's.
Good luck!

Re: Help! Bent diff pinion?
Hi Peter - that's interesting. The answer is I don't know.
Perhaps we should strip it and take a look. One thing I'm frightened of is that there seem to be a bewildering selection of diffs and parts for the Patrol - Nissan in Europe list 17 different diffs!
If you have a name you could point me towards in Aus, I'd appreciate it.
Many thanks

Re: Help! Bent diff pinion?
Mark, it's most likely to be the pinion shaft I guess, but it would be safer to check. Split off the prop shaft, then remove the companion flange, then jack up one rear wheel and turn it while looking at the pinion shaft.
I have just had an idea for a source closer to you: PM Nikolai B here on this forum with your VIN no. He works for Euro 4x4 parts in Spain, and may well be able to help you.
Unfortunately I can't recommens a supplier for such, but Google is your friend, I am told?

Re: Help! Bent diff pinion?
Im sure the Identification plate (firewall inside engine bay) displays diff ratio and size.
Ie: HG41 = 4.1 Ratio , HG43 = 4.3 ratio etc
And H260 = 260mm size , H233 = 233mm size
2006 4.2 = GU/Y61
Is it a Wagon or Pickup?

Re: Help! Bent diff pinion?
Thank you gentlemen, that is very helpful.
I've asked the mechanic to strip the diff and I'll go down and take a look at the companion shaft.
Nissan tell me that there's a mistake on the chassis no - JN1TCSY61Z0559133 - but that's from the registration document here, which is hand written. The plate on the car is sure to be right.
I wish the car - which is a 5 door estate wagon - wasn't 500km away!
