Hello Russ.
For what it's worth. On the Clutch side of things, you can only replace the plate if you like. The agent do not sell a kit you buy every thing seperate.
The G-box, what happend there? do you or they know what caused the failure? It is not common on a box like that to have a failure of that kind. I am not suguesting what caused the box to fail, but would like to share what I have found on the same failures.
Because those boxes run a very high milage and only have a 5th gear problem in some of the models, I think your failure are a human mistake. I can be off the mark here. But here goes what I think. Earthstrap not connected or bad connection. Maybe wire where swopped out when work were done on a battery convertion.A bad earth can cause many problems. Electricity always go for the shortest route, and if the transmission is that way it wil go there.
Anyway just want to share that with you. I have seen Patrol's and LC's boxes and diff"s from the inside, no comparison. Its nice to work on a LC, the parts are mutch lighter.
Oh yes, I just turbo-ed a LC 4.5 Pick-up. I bought all the Toyota parts from them. They did not had a clutch assembly in stock. ( I fitted the 105 series clutch in to the pickup, its bigger.) The gasgets for the front axle I had to wait 5 weeks.( I made the ring and pinion stronger, they brake! A Patrol not.) Anyway Toyota reminded me of Nissan. No stock, weeks to wait. I ordered more parts in November for the dash, still waiting. ( I want to fit a Toyota rev couter- the LC 4.5 pickup do not have one. Anyway.
Cheers

I frans, Ja, i sea what you saying, its not only Nissan that are not up to scratch. Personally i feel its pathetic that there is not a bigger inventory of stock (for all makes of cars) in south africa. If someone wants to sell a product and back their aftersales service, well then parts availability fall into that too. Anyway, cant change this now i guess, im just frustrated.

I will post a separate thread on my gearbox problem as soon as its all sorted out by Nissan. I dont want to do this yet as i have a pending legal case with certain company(s) should this not be met to my satisfaction. Once i receive the vehicle back and all is well, i will produce what is surely to be a horrifying story for all to read.

Thanks for your patience.

Ps: As far as clitch goes, i think im gonna replace all the components so i dont have to go through this again later (too soon).

I would say 500k km is rather the exception than the norm though. Have you had your patrol from new?
I bought it in 2005 at 256 000km with FSH etc. At that stage the only parts under the bonnet they replace were fan belts and missing dipstic.

Must say, the growl at low revs (1000-1300 rpm) is steadily increasing - I might be in for a big gearbox (+ clutch) overhaul - any suggestions who/where out there

Hi Dungbeetle

I do not why, but I have heard that growl a low refs on a number of 4.2TDs in the past. The noise does not aggrevate beyond a certain point, and the ones that I know of seem to go on without breaking anything. Maybe they still will?

I have had that noise on both my Patrol pickups 4.2D. Both had the noise since very low KM (ie: 35 000km on odo) , and is more noticeable/annoying with the Nissan Upgraded HD clutch.

We still dont know if this is something to be worried about or "completely normal" , whichever way it is, my gearbox is being totally rebuilt under warranty (actually out of warranty (135 000km on odo now) , because i alerted nissan to this multiple times, 2 of which were before 100 000km/3 year.

Total cost for the rebuild is close to if not more than R50 000. :surprised: so be sure of what noises are good and which are not.

The failure of my box however, when looking for a root cause, seems to be the 2 main bearings turning in the casing (a rear problem in general motoring) which cause the whole train to float, this added premature wear to all other components...

Funniest thing of all though was when the Extended warranty assessor reported that they will only pay out 50% because this was normal wear and tear for a gearbox like this. Nissan South Africa even called him directly to educate him that this was certainly NOT normal wear and tear for a Patrol Gearbox and that 100% payout will be enforced , or covered by Mayfair, who first "fixed" the gearbox. What a Knobhead.

Anyway, i've already said too much, i will do full story when all is complete.
