Gerrie I will be the first to step into the breach here, even though I do not consider myself to be an expert.
The first thing to realize is that there are many good tires, and probably no such thing as a "best" tire. It depends too much on what factors/characteristics are important to you.
As a ridiculous example, the front tire found on a 2x4 tractor is no good on the back of a Ford F100, even though it might fit.
So firstly, you need to figure out what you want to use the tires for, and then you must decide what characteristics are important to you, such as:
1) Grip on tar
2) Grip on wet tar
3) Grip on rocks
4) Grip in mud, and the ability of the tire to clean itself
5) Flotation on sand
6) Resistance to punctures
7) Resistance to sidewall damage
8) Milage
And so forth.
The ideal sand tire is not always good in mud or on the road, so it is important to be honest with yourself about what you want to do and what is most important.

Terwyl ek motorfiets gery het, het ek agtergekom dat die band die enigste kontak is wat jou voertuig met die pad het, en dit die laaste plek is waar jy geld wil bespaar! Ek sê nie mens moet die duurste koop nie, maar beslis nie die goedkoopste nie.
Huidiglik het my Patrol 285/75 Cooper STTs op wat ek vir 'n bargain by Vaatjie gekoop het. 3 was splinternuut en die ander 2 het so 5000 km op gehad - hulle is fantasties in alle opsigte en hanteer selfs beter op 'n nat pad as my vorige stel Dueller 694s wat ek op my Mazda bakkie gehad het.
Ek stem 100% saam met Peter itv kriteria en sal "looks" en beskikbaarheid bysit.
My kontak is Johann Viljoen (Johann Tyres) van First Alignment (021 949 5041) - hy is altyd beried om te help en onpartydige advies te gee. (Hy kry seker ook meer met bande te doen as die gemiddelde ou

Ek het al orals van Johann Tires gehoor, maar omdat ek 'n halwe kontinent weg is, het ek nog nooit van sy dienste gebruik gemaak nie.
Vir die gemiddelde ou is dit egter nogal moeilik om regtig kennis op te bou hieroor, veral in terme van 4x4s, want meeste van ons gebruik dood eenvoudig nie genoeg bande om kennis van al die verskillende bande op te doen nie. Verder is ons ook geneig om, as ons iets kry wat redelik goed werk daarby te bly. Verder is dit ook een van die areas waar daar gedurig inkrimentele verbeteringe aangebring word deur al die groot name.
Dit help ook nie altyd om na handelaars te gaan nie, want meeste van hulle het bande met spesefieke vervaardigers en dra nie noodwendig baie kennis van die ander ouens se produkte nie. Daarom is iemand soos Johann 'n baie goeie beginpunt.
Persoonlik het ek BF A/T's gekies vir die volgende redes:
Ek spandeer meeste van my tyd op die teerpad. Wanneer ek veld toe gaan, kan dit amper enige plek wees, maar omdat ek bly waar ek bly beteken dit gewoonlik klippe en dalk bietjie modder. Daarom het my prioriteitlys so iets gelyk:
1) Toughness
2) Reasonable road manners (these tires are known to let go sometimes on wet roads, but in this size on the Patrol they seem Ok)
3) Good grip off road, and reasonable self-cleaning ability.
4) Good flotation (mostly due to the size) for sand.
5) Milage
By the way, I suspect the next set (unless something else comes along before then) will be either BFG KM2's or Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's

Easy. The best tyre is on my 4x4 and so-on and so-on.....

Ek sukkel baie om BFG A/T's in die 285/70R17 grootte te kry (hulle maak nie 'n 75 in die AT's nie) - ek wou gaan vir die Cooper ST 285/70R17 maar Dunlop bring dit blykbaar glad nie in nie. Daar is wel BFG MT's en Cooper STT's onderskeidelik beskikbaar in die 285/75R17 groottes.
Die MT en STT is 'n "meaner looking" band en lyk deksels goed op die Patrol en ek oorweeg dit maar maar het 'n paar bedenkinge/vrae hieroor:
- Wat is die petrolverbruik verskil op teerpad/goeie grondpad (bv Namibia) tussen die AT / ST's en die MT / STT's ?
- Is daar 'n beduidende verskil in padgeraas tussen die AT / ST's en die MT / STT's ?
- Watter is die meer geharde band in offroad kondisies as dit kom by (a) klip en (b) sand - AT / ST's of die MT / STT's ? Uit die aard vd saak is die MT / STT's beter in modderige toestande. Ek is ook nie soseer gepla met "overall" km's nie - as ek so 50 tot 60 000km op 'n stel bande kry is ek meer as gelukkig.
- Is daar 'n beduidende verskil tussen die BFG MT en die Cooper STT mbt bogenoemde issues ?
Ek ry meestal vrek ver om by my "offroad" bestemming uit te kom en moet daarom dink aan wat die beste in die 2 werelde is - maar as daar nie 'n beduidende verskil in bogenoemdes is nie is dit miskien 'n opsie om eerder vd MT /STT's te gaan.

Jan-Dup jy kan maar gaan vir daardie BFG M/T. Ek was jare lank 'n voorstaander vir die A/T's maar die KM2's van BFG is stunning.
Ek het myne nou net meer as 5000 km. Daar is bietjie meer padgeraas as die A/T op sekere opevlaktes maar vir my outperform hulle die A/T orals anders
Ek het voorheen Good Year MTR's op my Safari gehad wat amper gevaarlik was in die nat - met die KM2's ry ek amper dieselfde as op die droë pad!
Jy is welkom om my KM2's te kom ervaar as jy weer Stellenbosch om ry!
