Which Battery ?

gents, its time, ...... my poor battery is now moer toe.

What is the correct battery for the 4.2D N/A.

Where can i get good quality battery ? (is this a Midas thing, or is there a place to get quality ?)

Should i just ask them to match the same size/power and thats it ?

My Patrol and Safari has got a 652 - most batteries are made by National Batteries in Wynberg so they are all the same.

For me there is only one battery, for normal use it is a Raylite. :salute:
On all my vechiles they where the only battey to outlast the time i had the car.

SABAT gives me GREAT service - Excide lasts 12 month waranty time + two weeks. Willard in the Sani lasted 3 years

Go for high cycle batteries,and not deep cycle.To glow and crank that diesel is not a easy task. :thumbup:

I'm planning to replace my 2nd battery with a Raylite Ultimate.

If they can start Arctic Truck's diesel Hilux in Antarctica, It'll work for the highvekd winters too...

I am not a battery fundi but I want to join Frans in what he mentioned.

The brand of battery is important, BUT the capacity of the battery is more important. The moment we turn our car key, the battery feeds current to two functions namely (1) to crank the engine and (2) to run the electronic management system...ECU etc. Therefore, the current (ampere) required for a particular vehicle depends on the cranking-amps required (size and type of engine) as well as the complexity of the management system.

So often people start to complain about starting problem especially on winter mornings. They then look for the problem everywhere else but the deteriorated battery capacity, not knowing that the car's management system goes bossies during the cranking cycle because of below par current feed to the ECU and TCM.

The 4.8 GRX has a fairly big requirement as a result of the engine capacity as well as the ECU and TCM current requirement...all of which has to run perfectly well during the cranking cycle. In fact, it is well known that the TCM can sustain serious damage when the car is cranked by a flat battery and/or incorrect "jump-start" procedure. The bigger diesel engines requires some serious amps as well to pre-heat and crank. Add to that the complexity of the specific vehicles ECU and TCM systems and it starts to tell a very interesting story. Not all battery dealers are up to speed on this theory. Be aware! Do not buy a battery on price only. Goedkoop koop is duur koop!

Is the capacity measured in Ah? What must i be looking for here ? ie:what would indicate high cycle and what would indicate deep cycle?

Need to sort this out today...

I wish I knew the termenology correct. However, ask for a "high cycle" battery with high "cold cranking capacity". If the salesman can't translate that into the correct term, stay away.

The simplicity of this is:

1. A deep cycle battery provide current for long continious periods but not high volumes for short periods.
2. A high cycle battery provide high volumes of current for short periods but cannot sustain that for long periods.

That's why high cycle is ideal for starting a vehicle and deep cycle ideal for running the engel fridge.
