Defender vs Patrol

I have driven a 110 2.5 TDI over all types of terrain. Great vehicle and I will never say anything bad about any Defender or Series Land Rover. I have owned 3 Series Landies and yes they are not a joy to drive on tar but put them in their comfort zone and they are great. But the best thing for me is when I have to go far to enjoy my 4x4 experience I arrive at the destination without a pain in my kidney. After the trail it is again great to point the Patrol homeward and enjoy the trip back. (Ekke kan myself baie beter uitdruk in Afrikaans)

I have been off-road (Bass lake and Hennops) with my brother who owns a TDI and never ever once could the Landy do anything better than the Patrol. He though, cannot say the same. I agree with Peter on the type of obstacles that Landy's find more difficult.

I have however encountered Defenders on the local trails frequently and I am sorry Koos but I find myself in disagreement with you where articulation and traction are concerned. We idle up and through obstacles where the defenders either just won't go or struggle badly. The obstacles in question are muddy cross-axles and also loose wet shale with fixed steps.

OK OK i pull my words back !the rules are no brand bashing on this forum...........the thing is EVERY time a landy goes with on trip something breaks and because the 4.8 is the strongest i end up pulling it home !!!!!we all want to enjoy our 4x4 experience and pulling people with out fokus makes me mal !!!!!
in moz we had a 110 puma a disco 4 and a disco 3 that for the life of me they could not get up the 60m sand dune that leads to the beach . every time one wheel spins the stability control kicks in and takes the power of the wheels ie landy stuck !! we need to remember that all 3 these cars had to go back to get alarms reset after a 3 week holiday and had to stop along the way to get out of limp mode . we came back and parked our patrollie ready for next time

Also, I feel the need to point out that the test was done on the Land Rover's development track, where all landies have been tested and developed since 1947.

Firstly I am sure you would get the the opposite if Nissan was doing the test.
Secondly, why not pit it against the new patrol. It is the new Defender that also has T control and a centre lock vs a GU model with a rear diff lock.


I summary the proof is in the pudding. Land Rover has done well in Africa for almost 50 years and the have some gems in their line up. They even hold the record for the fastest vehicle from London to Capetown nogal in a Disco TDI.I agree with Tinus. Landys struggle keep their wheels on the ground and in my experiance struggle where the Trolls just keep going. Also lets not start with maintenance costs.

THE TEST WAS BETWEEN A 3.0 Di AND A CURRENT 110 PUMA, NOT OLDER 110'S AND SERIES L/ROVER'S.
IT JUST SHOW ONCE AGAIN, ALL 4X4'S OWNERS COMPARE THEIR VEHICLE WITH DEFENDERS, NOT A PATROL VS A ISUZU OR PAJERO OR OR OR NO WAYS A DEFENDER , I WONDER WHY

But anyway, any vehicle on sand or beach, is the MOER behind the steering and the tyre PRESSURE.

I have seen beach buggies and 2x4's out perform 4x4's , why the MOER obviously

O ja, no Patrol with standard suspension has better articulation or traction than a standard Defender , asseblief manne.

I have no doubt the reliability will be better with the Patrol but Koos does make some interesting comments.

The surprises on Koos' post are

Running cost , Nissan Patrol in SA dont have any indies for parts etc, L/Rover in all major centres, parts MUCH MUCH cheaper then Nissan

Koos how is the 2.4 PUMA engine the highest mileage engine in europe? I thought it was a new CRD engine - sourced from Peugeot like the D3/4. Big upgrade (reliability wise) over the BMW engines.

I NEVER thought a Defender would actually come close on any of those . Grant I saw that clip but it's a SWB not quite fair.

Can we expand it a bit, how about the petrol 110 vs a 4.8 Patrol.

As for Geldenwagen, they do look cool in all respects but the negative is Merc's reliablity index hasn't been very good the last decade averaging last in the world - even Toyota hasn't been in the Top 10. I remember the Merc CEO siting the same reasons as Toyota for their poor ratings.

We are not brand bashing. I drive a Patrol and love it. Of course I am going to see the best in my vehicle. If people are to sensitive then do not start a post like this. By starting this post, the expectation was that forum member offer their opinions. What else did you expect. Yes I drive a Patrol, but wish I had a Defender..
