Hi Jules,

Golf lights are not a straight fit. I opted for crystal clear lenses from Assegai Trading in the Cape. With this I fitted Narva 90/100 w globes. Two friends of mine have fitted HID kits and both have had problems. In addition to this I have KC's on the bumper and small IPF's on the roof rack :mytwocents: :mytwocents: .

As a matter of interest - what kind of problems did they have with the HID's - and do you think it is related to the GQ models. Neither me nor Frans have experienced any problems with the HID kits we installed -and we also converted both our headlights as well as the spot lights.

I am more curious to know than anything else - I know a number of people that will not put in anything else - Hein Burnett from Burnco is one of them and swears by HID's - it is one of the first things he changes when he buys another car.

Jules

So ja - ek weet nou nie wat ek vir jou moet se oor keuse nie - maar ek will ook nie my kar vol gate boor vir nuwe ligte nie. Soos voorheen se ek weer - ek is baie happy en wil niks anders he nie.

Groete

Gents,

The problems that two friends had wit the HID's was lift of bulb and balast driving off road. Admittedly both of them travel on dirt roads and the issue seems to be with the continual vibration. Also both sets are from China.

The H4 HID's comes in two variants. One has two filaments/bulbs and the other has a sleeve / slider on a solenoid that moves forwards on dimm and back on bright. I'd bet that the guys who had problems had the solenoid type.... They are specified for onroad use only.... The two bulb version should be fine...well I hope so, I fitted a set yesterday to my car.

Hi All

Just another observation on this issue again.

I just came back from my Lesotho / Transkei hoiday - and the roads we travelled were terrible. There was huge amounts of rain every where - and the pothole roads in especially the Traskei was horrific. Lesotho roads were not that bad but most of it was gravel / dit roads and very bumpy.

Well I never endured a single problem with my HID's -not once did they blink, stink, think or did anything funny - they were as bright as stars and gave me light into Japan at night!!!

Jules,
Did the calculations on headlights a while ago, but for me (overlanding only) HIDs add complexity. Stock lights do not have relays and pull the current directly through the switch/ stalk- replacement is about R650 (nissan 1 tonner)...interesting fault I promise
Heavy duty wiring, relays on stock headlights should increase output by around 50%
Also gives me the existing loom as a backup
Fitted, not tested- vehicle still on blocks
