3.0D Trouble....need I say more?

Post by Langman »

Hi Guys

Too scared to ask because I have a feeling I may not like the answers I will be getting back from all those in the know. When I pull away and the revs start picking up there is a "new" sound coming from the engine compartment...sounds like the turbo whining or something to that effect  , just a bit more coarse. For the past week at every start up there was a squeeking (sounds like slipping fan belt) noise during the first minute or so and then it goes away. I ignored this as I was on holiday but now I have a sneaky suspicion that this probably has something to do with the new sound which I suspect originates from the turbo...by the way I have noticed a loss of power!!! I am really too scared to even start asking for any prognosis as this is one of those hand grenade machines. @ SALTMAN & ROCSTOMPA this sound coincidentally started a day or so after our dune trip at Brakkenduine on the 27th Dec!! :oldtimer: Could the sand or heavy revving have played a role??? My engine temp was normal throughout...I specifically checked the heat guage all the time.

If it is the turbo what would be the recourse to remedy...cheapest off course! I have made up my mind to do an entire exchange but is still looking into the options as well as finding someone reputable to do the conversion in PE at a reasonable cost. I DO NOT WANT TO INVEST IN THE 3.0 D so hopefully I can buy a month or so in terms of time to do my homework because the rest of the engine is good and don't want to kill it, sure there is still a few rands lying in there when I want to get rid of it. I defintely want to convert to petrol on the manual gearbox...was looking at the NISSAN INFINITY V8, anyone got any experience or feedback/info worth sharing on this engine? Any other options...besides the R40K plus ones and LEXUS motors? The good thing about LEXUS is that parts are probably more freely available these days which I suppose you also need to consider.

C'mon guys...need advise and tips/suggestions urgently.

Frans...would love to hear what else can be put into the Troll at a reasonable cost...quite liked your FORD 4.0 conversion. How does this engine handle the size? Also what would I need to consider...the expensive stuff (adaptors, electronics) when tackling a conversion from diesel to petrol?

Hi Langman

A friend of mine had an incident where his car suddenly devoloped a blowing sound as well as a loss in power. When it happened there was also some white smoke from the exhaust but this dissapeared quickly. In his case it was a very small hole in the intercooler. Perhaps you are lucky and it is something small like that?

Good luck.
Peter

Hi Langman,

I would consider a GM V 8 diesel.

No David...that's the price of another PATROL! :rolling: Knew there was a reason why that V8 Diesel looked so good and all you could see on that Ozzie oke's face was just teeth because he knew how much dollars were coming his way. Thanks for checking this out for me...definitely back to the drawing board for me, at least I have time. To avoid these nasty shocks will definitely keep my eye out locally...we have a lot of nice machines locally that can fit in that big hole in the front.

My requirements are simple and like most guys...looking for more power than the 3.0D (they are generally sh%t slow and I tow a lot, not to mention I would like to overtake again @ 120km/h and up), reasonable consumption under normal driving conditions (when messing around I am willing to be penalised with heavy consumption), reasonably priced and reliable conversion and engine(once money is thrown at this I don't want to go back every 2nd week) and lastly I want to hear the damn thing roar! Taxi's must know I am on my way! :woo: Is that too much to ask? I think that this is exactly what ALANVS is busy doing with his but I need to get a reasonably similar effect for much cheaper.

Yip - I'm also waiting to hear from Alan about the cost and performance of his conversion and yes I also believe in 'too much power is just enough'!

A while ago mine had a similar sound, turned out the manifold gasket was blown. Take it to a reputable mechanic and find out what the problem is before jumping to conclusions (unless you have a spare R200K in your pocket that is burning you  )
