Insurance..??
Hi All
Been reading about the insurance on Hilux and Tuners on the Community site and just wondering where do the Troll owners insure their precious and how much they pay.
I have a '99 4.2D and pay about R512 at Outsurance, this is for the vehicle only.
How does this compair?

Re: Insurance..??
Insurance rates are based on weighing of a number of factors together namely Insured value, geographical area use of vehicle including residential area and cross border driving, experience of driver, previous claims of the policy holder (where even your household claims might have an effect), tendancy of the specific make and model to incur claim related incidents (accidents, theft etc). It is called the risk profile. It is therefore very subjective to try and compare premium Rand value between policies without this weighing in the mix. Compare apples with apples.
Different insurance companies have different appetites for risk taking based on the same factor. You will find that one company will be cheaper on the same risk profile compared to another company and in different geographical areas.
To top this debate well up with foam. Some insured customers do not declare their true profile only to save a few buck per month (student car "only used for driving by mom and dad between home and work"....) They jump up and dow of pleasure...tell it to all their mates...everybody now think they dicovered a better insurer which no one before them ever dicovered. Come claims time and the assesor disover the truth...paw-paw hits the fan.
Good insurance is not only about the premium, but also about the insurers performance at claims time...which might rely heavely on the customers know-how honesty. How often do we see claims being repudiated just because the customer was not insured comprehensively...hence the cheap premium.

Hi John,

Re: Insurance..??
I m also with Cross Country - full comprehensive package.
Mufasa is insured for R175 000 after the 4.2 conversion - they are very much aware about this.
All extras specified for a total of R115 000. I even sent them photographs of Mufasa with all the extras - just to be 100% sure we are on even grounds.
Total R290 000 = monthly premium of R722-51.
I have not had any claims with them but have only heard good things about them - and when my 3.0l went BOOM I phoned them and they discontinued my vehicle's insurance whilst "off the road" without any penalties - I saved four months on premiums I did not have to pay. As far as I am concerned that's good service by itself.
I went the different route when I went shopping for 4x4 insurance - as to go and ask the panel beaters that work with insurance companies who do they have the least trouble with when it comes to claims.
And because the 4x4 world is so specialised and the general claims clerk in most insurance companies call centres most probably not even knowing what a 4x4 with all the extras looks like - I think it is best to be insured with someone that knows and understand this spesific specialised field. Of all the questions I asked about which insurer to use only 2 came out tops in the 4x4 world - Tough Stuff and Cross Country.
My normal cars, household and other stuff is with a different insurer again - one to whom this is not an unknown field.

Be careful with Outsurance - I used to be with them. I also had the Out in Africa (full off road) cover - but according to the consultant I spoke to they do not cover your vehicle when you go 4x4-ing on a trail - there idea of full off road cover is when you go "overlanding" - out of the country - but still on "road surfaces" that you will be able to find / trace on a map. Off the beaten track with man made roads in mountains or areas that is not designated for normal vehicle use they will not cover you. I was told by a 4x4 panel beater to phone them and ask those spesific questions -hence the fact I found out that I would not be covered for damages incurred during a 4x4 excursion off te beaten track. And funny enough also - when I went to different panel beaters in the 4x4 panelbeater world Outsurance was also the insurer most panelbeaters dont want to deal with.
Aycase - this is the way Outsurance is perceived here in Cape Town by most of the 4x4 panel beaters. For what its worth - phone them and check thoroughly - you have nothing to loose only to gain.

Re: Insurance..??
I just want to add my
with what JG said - its imperative that you are totally honest with your insurer about the use of your 4x4 - otherwise you could and most probably will find yourself in trouble when it comes to claim time.
I also don't use my Patrol on a daily basis - hence the fact that I have a 9 year old vehicle with only 150 000km on it. Since I have bought it I have not put more than 10 000 km a year on my car - which I know Cross Country also took in consideration when I took out the insurance. I other words my car is not daily subjected to use and risk.
Your age, age of licence, general claims history and the fact that I have completed a level 1,2 and 3 specialised off road 4x4 driving courses also gave me discount on my premium - the same I receive for my car insurance as I have completed 2 offensive and defensive driving courses with BMW's advanced driving school.
It does help - not only with insurance premiums but also how you drive on a daily basis and "read" other road users. I can truly say that on more than one occassion I have been able to avoid accidents due to the driver training I had - instances where I most probably would have reacted differently and been part of an accident.

Re: Insurance..??
Hello guys
does anybody have any claims experience with Discovery? The consultant I spoke to says they will cover me for trails and overlanding, but I am not actually sure he even knew what we were talking about.
