I am planning a trip to Matusadona in Zim and on a houseboat in Kariba. 3 vehicles, including a freelander2 and i am also taking my 2 year old son with. I’d welcome any information on the trip and in particular:
- Recommended campsites in matusadona (we’re softies so would like hot showers !)
- Information on the road sector from Bulawayo / kwekwe / gokwe / tashinga
- Can i get to Kariba from Tashinga in 10 hours?
- Which is better to get to kariba from Tashinga? Via Karoi or via the road the ‘hugs’ the shoreline.
- Any ideas on recent camping costs
- Any contacts on getting a boat to fetch us (without cars) in Tashinga and take us to Kariba to meet our houseboat.
- Anyone used the houseboat Zambuka and any comments on it?
I will promise to revert with a detailed trip report as thanks!

Re: Zim - Matusadona and Kariba routes
Hi Carlo
I am wanting to do this route in December/Jan (Kariba - Vic Falls) and have also struggled to find info - this isnt a commonly travelled journey from what I have read (which is also kinda nice though!).
You can read in th August SA4x4 though, and there are a few reports on the 4x4community forum as well.
Lariba to Tashinga in 10hrs doable, but probably require some hard driving, and that assuming "good" road conditions (rainy season!).
Once i have finalised plans I will share them, hopefully by end of this week.
