How to spot a 3.0 crd?

Post by NoPressure »

Good evening everyone. I am ashamed to acknowledge that I've not been here in a while. I had some emotional healing to do after I sold my Patrol. It's good to read the posts of all the familiar members again.

But now I'm starting to look out for another Patrol, more about that at a another stage on another post. My question is really simple. When did the 3.0 go from direct injection to common rail? I could not find an answer on the forum search. The internet gives conflicting answers, especially when specifically referring to RSA.

In Namibia there is a 2014 3.0 listed as DI-D, surely by then it should be a crd? If still a DI, surely Nissan sorted the ZD issues after 11 years?

My understanding is that there was no set date, nor any external change to badging or designation.

As far as I know, the only way to know is to look under the bonnet?

Thanks Peter.

Oftentimes in Namibia we also seem to get "Africa spec" vehicles. These are variants of common vehicles in RSA, that are sold with certain older or less techy components. Thus, it might not even align with cessation of the vehicle variant in RSA.

But my question thus still remains, are the very later DI models still as prone to engine failures as the earlier models? I'm asking for a friend who wants to sell his 97 kzte prado for this. He had recentlyhad to do a full engine rebuild on it. (I personally have my eye out for a TB48 manual).

Hi Ruan,

I think that Peter is correct. I have a 2013 3.0l and its not the CRD. Having a tyre change late last year the Patrol next to mine was also a 2013 but according to the owner was a CRD. He said it was the first CRD sold in PE. I did not get to look under the hood (it was in the air) so I still dont have a visual on the CRD engine bay.

Badging on the rear simply was GL 4x4 - exactly the same as mine.

Cheers

I understand that the CRD is far more reliable, but I have heard of them packing up.

Whether it's better or worse than any other 3l common-rail TDI out there, I just don't know. Once an engien has a reputation, it tends to not only stick but even spread out. There are guys who love them and say they are the best engine ever fitted to a Patrol, and other guys who won't touch them with some other oke's pole.

Hi in SA Nissan started selling CRD along side with Di in 2013. But after this all diesels sold in SA were CRD's. My first Patrol was a CRD of year 2013. Josh also bought one in the same year.
I recently bought a CRD again, however, it was a 2014 model. This is to going to replace my 2016 4.8. Only way to spot the difference between Di and CRD, is in the engine bay. Otherwise, all patrols look a alike..

The same "GL 4x4" badging is also stuck on the back of my TD42
