Wow looks rough. How long does the detour take?
I like a challenge but I can imagine I will be fatigued at this point and happy to skip some rough stuff.
After re-looking at it I think that it would not make sense to do such a long detour, will probably be better to do smaller detours closer to the river if need be...
Might help to send a drone up to take a look...
This is the worst part of the molototsi:
(by the blue circles. if my memory is not letting me down. I have not actually recorded the coordinates when in the river...)
Thanks for the compliment Fanus. The Sussiebussie(Fortuner) enjoys a good outing with the Patrols.
As PC mentioned, starting the day early is key! There are ample amounts of rocks around if you need to do some rock packing. I have also never needed to detour or "miss" a section of the river. You have the pack leaders and kamp-kommondante normally with nice large capable vehicles scouting routes or following where others have driven. Then I normally trail behind them, however every vehicle is very different, some have massive clearance but with a wide stance, some are narrow with smaller wheels, some have a turning circle and others cant even turn in a 20m diameter. Thus in your vehicle's case, keep your weight low, make sure you have good underbody protection and some sort of rock-slider.
And if you get stuck or hung up, normally a short tug an you are out. The patrol guys are truly an amazing group, they will assist when needed! I do not think there has been many vehicles that have done a few Rivertrip trips, that have not needed to be recovered in one way or the other. It is an experience like no other! My first trip the Fortuner was stock standard! But I had Desmond Meyburgh driving with me, and he was an excellent spotter! Only wrote off my standard steps.
But as the mining increases, the rock sizes also increase every year. Don't stress it, rivertrip is what you make of it! Can be daunting and hard driving, or it can be one of the best experiences you will ever have!
For medical reasons it would be unwise for my wife to go this year.
Does anybody feel like coming along for the ride in my passenger seat?
I can probably supply enough camping gear for somebody who doesn't have as well.
