Guide to replacing halogen bulbs easily

Post by Witbobbejaan »

It’s that time of life again. The dreaded failing of a halogen headlamp bulb on a Y61:

Step 1: Crack a fresh bottle of high proof alchohol.
Step 2: Drink
Step 3: Park the car down slope to prevent the new bulb sliding out while you are trying to insert the Devil’s Retaining Clip.
Step 4: Start swearing in advance that the engineer or janitor who designed the headlamp assembly goes to hell, and that he’ll be replacing bulbs for eternity.
Step 5: Start hoping in advance that the executive that ignored the f-up and declared that the bulb can be easily changed without removing the grill and lamp assemble, goes to hell, and that he’ll be replacing bulbs for eternity.
Step 6: Google the address of the guy who decided to use that retaining clip.
Step 7: Watch the weather report and calculate how much time you have before the rain comes. Notice how NO manual has a detailed drawing of how to replace the bulb...everyone just gave up... but they do warn not to have the bulb out long. I wonder why.
Step 8: Change your safe's combination randomly so you can’t get hold of a gun.
Step 9: Drink some more.

EDIT: Plan for a long needlenose pliers and long magnet to extract retaining clip from depths of engine bay. And also buy extra bulbs because by the time you are done, you'll need a new bulb.
