Carnage Canyon 18-21 March 2023

Post by Alex Roux »

Carnage Canyon consists of two days of intensive rock crawling.
It is generally regarded as one of the toughest 4x4 trails in Southern Africa.
For long wheel based vehicles bare minimum is 35" and rear locker.
But to make to "the Beach" at the end of the trail is unlikely for a long wheel base, unless it has 37" and double locked.

The campsite is wild (zero facilities).
This is half way between the first day and the second day's driving.
Therefore spectators can walk up and down the river in which the driving is done, at their own leisure.

The road to the camping spot and the camping spot itself is not often used, and therefore requires some clearing work to be done by the host.
There is therefore a fee involved (to be confirmed) and that will need to be shared by all vehicles attending.

Maximum participants is 10 vehicles - split into two groups of 5 to enable more effective time management and breakages.
Additional further 10 vehicles - that can join for the Saturday and Sunday, camping, kuier and spectators.

We will be heading there on the Friday afternoon (17 March)
Carnage is driven on the Saturday and Sunday.
There is then also some "bonus material" available of an additional canyon with camping spot and hiking up second canyon, waterfall swimming etc - to be driven on the Monday and Tuesday. The 10 additional vehicles can join in on the driving on days 3 and 4, as this is less technical.

(Some people have approached me before I managed to confirm the date, and therefore effectively have prebooked. But still lots of spaces available)
Driving Canyon on Saturday and Sunday (18-19 March):
1. AlexR (MQ Safari)
2. Anthony Forgey (GU)
3. Tinus Lotz (GU)
4. Richard White (GQ Shortie)
5. Johan Meyer (GU)
6. Muller Coetzer (Rubicon).
7. Roelof and Rolien Botha (Rubicon)
8. Andre du Preez (GU)
9. Ryan Smuts (GU)
10. Jacques & Karin Nigrini

Those driving now fully subscribed!

Not driving the Canyon (Saturday and Sunday), but potentially driving additional trails /and second Canyon on the Monday and Tuesday before heading home (20-21 March):
1. Ian & Liana
2. Tijmen
3. PC & Sonja
4.
5.
6...

Remember that damage to your vehicle is very likely but remains your own responsibility.

Also, as regards the wild camping, I am not arranging for "chemical toilets" as these are expensive and not everyone's cup of tea.
Wild camping etiquette however will need to be strictly observed.

Thanks for your efforts Alex. As you know, I'm there like a bear. Riaan would probably like to join as well I'm sure.

Guys

Note the following:

- This trip does not happen every year.
- The canyon is an unspoiled part of nature. Going with this group is really the only way of accessing it (it is kind of like the river trip, except no other people, more secluded,
narrower, more rocky and more scenic).
- You need not drive the first two days if you do not want to damage your vehicle.
- The campsite is at the center of the first days' driving, and walking distance to the action.
- The subsequent two days (20 & 21 March) we will go to a second canyon nearby, easier driving and apparently even more scenic
