My 4.5 Fuel consumption

Post by mvcoller »

So today I did a trip to Roodeplaat Dam from Bedfordview and back home via Jorrie in Magalieskruin.

The need for the trip was to go and collect a Front Runner Wind Cheetah roof rack that I bought in Roodeplaat for the Patrol.

Travelling to Roodeplaat at around 110kph GPS speed (120 indicated) the Patrol used 15,98lt per 100km or 6.25km/lt. I fitted the roof rack there near the dam and on the way home (plus some travelling in the suburban traffic in Magalieskruin), I returned again via the highway (R21) to Bedfordview, again at a similar speed as going north, this time with a noisy roof rack fitted. This time the consumption was 16.42lt/100km or 6.09km/lt/

To say I am chuffed is an understatement. The vehicle is not running exactly 100%, it has a misfire at idle, more pronounced when cold. It is less noticeable when hot, so I will have to start looking for the fault. I cant hear a misfire while travelling, but I am sure it is present. I somehow think it is plug leads, as I have changed plugs already and cleaned carbon build-up on the contacts inside the dizzy cap.

Aside from the plug leads, Jorrie suggested I also look for air leaks in the inlet duct between the MAF sensor and the motor. I am sure I will find the reason for the misfire and further improve the fuel consumption.

The 4.5 has some kind of an expansion box in its intake. The bottom of this box melts because of the exhaust heat and leaks air into the intake.

That box is actually an inlet tract silencer

Mine is still OK, but my Patrol no longer has the aluminium heat shield. I will find one, one day. The vehicle does however have what is often called a "banana branch", not the cast iron manifold.

The cast iron exhaust manifold retains a lot more heat and without the heat shield fitted, tends to burn holes in the inlet tract silencer.
