Bought a 4500 Patrol.

Post by mvcoller »

I bought another Patrol, basically for customers to use who don't have their own 4x4. I am relocating to an area where there is nobody that rents out safari type 4x4s.

I had a budget in mind for a decent manual Y61, preferably petrol.

I contacted Tinus and I bought an ex vehicle of his that he sold to Pierre Scheepers in East London. Thank you Tinus and also for pointing me to the vehicle carriers who brought the vehicle up here for me. It sure was cheaper than flying down to East London and driving it back here.

It is a white 1998 4500 manual. I am christening it "YSBEER". I call my silver grey ZD30 Pattol "RHINO".

Pierre completely and properly repainted the vehicle and it actually looks very good. It seems a solid vehicle and considering its age, is in amazing condition. It has.5 nearly new Maxxis Bighorn 265/75 R16 tyres on original spotless 4500 mags. What amazed me with these Bighorns are that they have 3 ply sidewalls, unlike the Bighorns I had on my ZD30 previously and on my Terrano that only had 2 ply sidewalls

There are a few things I want to do, the 1st was a new stainless 63mm exhaust system. The system only had one silencer and the outlet had broken off right against this box. To get it through roadwothy I had to fit a new system with two boxes to also make it quieter.

I took it to Tom at TNT in Knights in Germiston. The vehicle already had a custom branch and Tom suggested a 63mm pipe, a 76mm would have lost me a lot of torque. I had previously fitted a 76mm system on my TD30 Patrol at TNT. I like their work.

There is not a lot more to do to the vehicle, it pulls strongly but is just as happy cruising at anything upward of 1500 rpm. I may fit wiring for the safaris where a fridge is needed. I will do it in such a way that I can remove the second battery when used as a day tourer.

I also need to get the spotlights to work and have fitted a second hooter as one was missing.

I am not going to kit it out, I may want to rent it to customers on day tours. If I do rent it out for safaris I will remove seats six and seven, put in a water tank, fridge and supply a tent, camping essentials and stretchers. I will only rent the vehicle out to customers going on safaris that I will be leading.myself.

Tomorrow I am taking it for its roadworthy test. Hope it passes....It should!
