Y60 GQ TB42S Coolant leak, heater elbow, service items DIY Maintenance

Good evening everyone,

So I traced a coolant leak to a heater hose elbow underneath the thermostat housing. Very difficult to get to, so I ended up taking the entire intake manifold off. This is on my TB42S Carb engine.
The steel elbow that the one coolant heater hose connects to had a moderate drip, around 1L of coolant over 150kms of driving, when I finally located the leak, I wiggled the elbow gently and the coolant just came FLOODING out! Leading me to believe at any moment I was about to loose all my coolant during a drive, and possibly seizing the engine. Luckily I caught it in time...
Also my temp gauge isn't working, need a new sender, so that could have ended badly.

Any idea where I can get a new one of these elbows or a part number, or would I have to get one fabricated?
While I was there, I saw a bunch of coolant and vacuum hoses I need to replace. Any suggestions, recommendations to get good quality coolant and vacuum hoses in cape town, preferably southern suburbs?

Next up, I need a new temperature sender/sensor for my coolant temp gauge. The one on the thermostat housing. Anyone have a part number to get the right resistance one for the TB42?

How much coolant does the TB42 system take? and should I do a 50/50 mix of coolant to distilled water? Any recommendations on a coolant brand to use?
I believe there is a block coolant drain plug below the exhaust manifold, on the TB42, is this correct?

Then,
I also want to do a service on my rig,

- Oil filter I believe a GUD Z153 will work?
- Air filter a GUD AG 1001 will work?
- What fuel filter should I use, part numbers?

What plugs work best for the TB42?
What is a good oil to use for the TB42? and how much (how many litres), my car didn't come with a handbook

What oil for front and rear diffs, and how much?

What oil for transfer case and manual 5 speed box, and how much?

A lot of questions I know, I would really appreciate the info!

also, what is this capacitor looking thing close to the ignition coil, looks like it had a ground wire attached to it.
Any idea what it is and what it does?

That fitting is a pain. I had a stainless one made up.
While you have it off, also look at the fitting at the bottom of the intake manifold.

You are correct about the air filter. I can't remember the oil filter. The fuel filter I used was GUD E13 (VW Polo). Mine ran best on BPR5ES plugs. Points are Echlin CS351, but I would strongly recommend fitting electronic ignition. Bruce from Offshore Marine Services down there in the Cape sells them. Search the forum for his phone number.

I think that cap is the condensor. Not sure. If you fit electronic ignition it becomes unnecessary.

Also search the forum, there is a link to down-load the official Nissan service manual. Very usefull document to have.

There is a drain plug, but I never faffed with it. Just shove a hose pipe into the thermostat housing.

Try Ravenol for the anti-freeze. I think it takes about 12 litres. There are lots of discussions here on what oils and how much.

Hi Guys,

So after digging more, I have decided to replace all the brass coolant fittings as well, mine are worse for wear.

Any recommendations in cape town, of who can make these up? I have a few suggestions, just looking if anyone has any other good recommendations?

Then, this fitting below the Thermostat housing, shouldn't this be a 90deg fitting, not straight?

Then, I'm thinking that I may as well do the thermostat and water pump while I am in there, do you guys have the part numbers for these, and who should I try locally to source them from? Terrain Tamer? Nissan...?
Would also like to get new radiator hoses, part numbers and any suggestions where?


Going to be replacing all the coolant lines, vacuum hoses to the carb and rubber fuel lines while I'm there.

Engine oil: I use Shell Hx5 in my sgl, but any 15w40 would probably do. I am considering Delo 400 for my next service.
(My GQ on 456k km does not use a drop of oil )
Oil filter: GUD z292 (same filter the td42 use, td42 use 2 though)
Diff oil: 80w90 GL5. (EP90 GL5 will also work)
Gearbox: 75w90 GL4
Transfer case: 75w90 GL4 or Dexron III ATF. (I have used 75w90 in all my Patrols - stick to what is in the vehicle).
Air filter: GUD ag1001
Petrol filter: fram g4777 or GUD e13
Spark plugs: bp5es
Points: Echlin CS351
Brake Pads: front: Fereodo FDB 643 / rear: FDB 937

Terrsin Tamer sell complete hose kits for some models. Not sure if they have for the TB42.

Many years ago I sourced a water pump from a place in Belleville, but now I would start at Terrain Tamer. If not there, try Partsouq (direct import).

Thanks, I may try to get a 90deg fitting made up, seems like it would be much easier on the hose, someone just used regular non bent hose and bent it 90 on my car previously now, so it looked like that hose was about to go!

Regarding gaskets,
would those also be import/terrain tamer, I doubt its something they stock.... could be wrong though.
Would like to put on a new intake gasket.
Does the thermostat housing use a gasket or just gasket maker? and for the water pump?

The water pump I got came with a gasket.

I think the thermostat housing just uses liquid gasket.

But it is actually very easy to make your own gaskets. Buy a sheet of gasket paper (called Valomoid or Flexoid) from your spares shop (it comes in various thicknesses, but 1mm should be fine for the intake gasket).

You cut this roughly to shape, then put the manifold in a vice (or hold it securely any way you like), and then use a small ball peen hammer to tap along the edges, effectively cutting the paper perfectly along the egde.

Like this: (although I prefer a much smaller hammer).

This doesn't work for all gaskets, but it's perfect for most.
Tappet cover and sump gaskets can be made from cork sheet (also available at spares shops). Head and exhaust gaskets must be bought.
