In game reserve driving as I know it (ie mostly idling around in the first three gears) tire size will have very little effect on fuel consumption. The engine is running extremely inefficiently in these conditions.

Revs will increase a little bit. About 6% given a specific speed and gear choice.

But you will lose about 20-25mm ground clearance. Not sure if that matters to you.

Personally I would rather go for 265/75 R15 or even better find a set of 16" rims and go for 235/85R16, which should be plentiful in a game reserve environment.

Good morning Guys

I am looking at replacing the tyres on my 1995 GQ, which are currently 31 x 10.5 x 15 General Grabbers.
The vehicle is used predominantly in the game reserves, and not serious offroading.
I was looking at getting a slightly quieter all terrain tyre, without affecting the overall gearing for highway use.
owners manual is not helpful, but 245/75-15 tyres have been recommended, but are 40mm less in rolling circumference, this will help with acceleration and torque, but how will it affect fuel consumption and revs?
Assistance would be appreciated.

I dont know hey but 31x10.r15 is already very small on a Patrol in my opinion, I would definitely not want to go smaller. I recently increase tyre size from 31x10.5r15 to 33x12.5r15 and cannot really notice an increase in fuel consumption or power loss, or gearing issues. Dont think tyre size makes that much of differrence on a tb42
