Is this a TB42 or TD42

Hi Guys,

I am seriously looking @ a 1995 Patrol SGL. The salesman claims the engine is a diesel, but the registration disk says TB42. As far as I know, that means 4.2Petrol. However, the engine looks like the 4.2 diesel. It looks like the engine has some work done to it. Can someone please perhaps clarify? Also, the odometer has 220 000 km on the clock. What shall I make of it with relation to the engine? I love this shape, but I don't feel like endless drama.

I don't know Patrol engines but I see coil packs and spark plug leads. So petrol IMO. But itlooks like it was converted from carb to some sort of fuel injection

Agreed. Coil pack and no carb. So I guess must petrol but at some stage made fuel injection.
If it is diesel, it would have been a conversion.
The SGL was the petrol model. Die diesel model was the ST.

I reckon the TB42 is pretty much just as reliable as a TD42.
With both engines, if it has been looked after, serviced regularly and not allowed to overheat, it wil last at least 600k km.

If not, it won't. Overheating is the primary killer of both these engines.

This more a 'collectors item' than anything else. I love that shape Patrol. I have always wanted one. They are gorgeous. I don't understand why Nissan did not keep this shape / model as a rival to the 76. It's an iconic shape and the paintwork is stunning. I have read though that the diesel 85KW straight six naturally aspirated engine is extremely good at idle speed. This is according to the Aussie Patrol forum. What is the difference in fuel consumption?

It is very difficult to predict the fuel consumption of that car, being modified as it is.

The range of possibility is anywhere from 4.8km/l (which is what I got toward the end of my petrol engine journey) and somewhere around 7km/l (what Chris Boegman gets from his fuel injected TB on a light and relatively standard car doing long trips only).

With the diesel you can expect 7-8.5km/l.

Note that I have installed a TD42 with turbo fairly recently. The cost of this engine is very high. Expect to pay over R100k for a nicely-rebuilt turbo engine plur radiator, intercooler and so forth.

But for basically the same usage and on the same car (weight, air resistance, tires all the same) my consumption improved from 3.8km/l (carb-fed TB with a probably somewhat worn carb and dizzy) to better than 7km/l. And I have considerably more power.

My Shorty TB42 (admittedly lighter than the station wagon) does:
Highway: 7,5km/l.
Traffic only 5km/l.
No lift and all terrain tires.

And I love that TB42 Carburattor. It runs very smooth, idles super quiet, engine always under-stressed. New pipes and madman water sensor (and regular service) will make that engine last forever.

OK, so you say the carburetor makes it run smoothly? But the carburetor has been replaced with a fuel-injection system? So it ain't that great?
