That's not bad at all. Are these boxes normally reliable??
Stupid question really,it is a Patrol part after all.... But have to make sure just in case.
I own a Gq import with original auto box. The original TB42e was replaced with a TB45e.
The car is approaching 600k km and the auto box has been at the repair shop twice. The first time it was age and mileage that caused seal failure ect and that complete overhaul cost R17000.00.
Second time it was a dent in the box sump exactly at the oil pickup point that caused oil starvation and overheating. Another complete overhaul R22000.00.
In my opinion , auto is far superior to manual offroad. Transmitting power to the wheels is smooth and controlled with huge torque available through the torque converter. Compression braking is the only drawback. This car also gets 6.5km/l average beating the manuals.
I own several Patrols , manual and auto and auto is king.
The TB42 was maltreated by a previous owner and had some inherent problems like a head that was skimmed close to limit and a knock that I could not find.
Also broke a valve causing a lot of grief.
The TB45 I bought was virtually brand new and most of the transplant was bolt on. The ecu was not compatible and I spliced the wiring loom of the engine to the old wiring. Had to alter management with a chip and the distributer is also very different.
It runs very well and it does not behave like a 25 year old car.
