Drivers Wing Mirror Repair

Hello all

I am starting this thread as I start preparing to delve into why my 2011 GRX drivers side wing mirror does not stay in place. (well I know why... I was more worried about looking out the left side than I was about making sure I did not crush my right side against the garage pillar.) But more worried about why internally it is not working.

It is visually OK. It clipped the wall and went crack but no damage is visible. You can manually push it to its normal position and it sort of stays there until about 80km/h where it starts to flip back and forth by a few degrees. The mirror fold function works fine to fold... but when unfolding it keeps going past the open position and goes all the way forward.

Anyway I think I broke off a stop piont or something? Anyone familiar with the mechanisms and whether it is a case of toss and replace or can I possibly fix it?

I made a post about repairing electronic mirrors when the ex wife clipped the mirror on the 4.8. Older model though - so the mirror did not have the electronic open/close function. Might be good enough to see how to strip down the stuff though.

Let me see if I can find a link to that thread.

Thanks, that will help when it comes to removing. I do have a question though, removing the door card, etc, was that just to get to teh plug? Do you think I could do an "exploratory diagnosis" just just removing the small panel?

I did this quite a long time ago and I'm not near my vehicle to check. But I think one needs to remove the door card to get to the screws / bolts that hold the mirror on. I also doubt there is enough slack on that cable to do an "exploratory diagnosis" without unplugging the cable. Removing the door card is not a massive job, and you should not break any clips of you follow the instructions above.

Good luck. Please keep us posted.
