Roof Racks

Hi guys.
Do roof racks have to be built for a specific vehicle like the GQ? Or can a generic rack (gutter mount) work. Takealot has quiet a few.

Most of the big-brand racks have adjustable feet, or one can purchase the feet separately (although often the cost of a set of feet exceeds the cost of a second-hand rack).

My Outback rack was originally made for a Disco 1/2, but I was able to modify the feet to work.

Try do some homework with measurements because if you have to mcguyver the brackets it can be quite a hassle, and if you need to replace brackets, as Peter says, it's not economically viable. Not just the length and width of the rack but also the height that the rack will sit above the roof. The last rack I bought I ended up having to do a lot of fabrication that in hindsight I should never have bothered with but I was committed and had to see it through to completion. Usually those brackets only have about 20mm-30mm max adjustment leeway in each direction (so 40mm-60mm width in total, and 20mm-30mm height)

We have both a gq and gu.

The roof dimensions and slope arent exactly the same, so unless my measurements were off when I looked a few months back, then even between patrol models a straight fit is not guaranteed...so make sure your brackets are adjustable in height and width.

Seems more complicated than I would have thought. Thank you for your advice.

Thanks Tinus. I might take you up on that offer. I do have an old rack, used on previous SUV. I'll have to drag it out as see if its modifiable.

I have the roofrack from a LAND ROVER 110 S/W on my Patrol GQ, I wanted the extra length because I have the Bundutop Roof tent - No problems to fit it on the GQ AND the higher fot of the Landy rack gives that I could fit my ladder, a 50, liter water tenk and the table UNDER the roofrack
