GQ sub tank installation options
Lets see what other sub tanks and installation options are available to add exstra fuel capacity to a GQ.
(Or GU with no sub tank )
I stumbled across an aussie thread where they mention connecting the main tank’s breather(inlet?) pipe to the sub tank. This creates a vucume inturn sucks the fuel from the sub tank to the main.
I have no idea how the mechanics of the main tank work with regards to piping and breathers etc, so find this quite interesting.
From patrol4x4:
“I have a long ranger ta35 , 70 litre sub tank that is still available from them .
It sits along the tailshaft on the drivers side.
It simply uses the vacuum in the main tank to draw it from the tank into the original
It uses a normal cap but is filled with epoxy to seal it.At the fill point you fill the tanks seperately .
stay with me on this, sounds not simple but it is ,kinda
You have only 1 normal fuel gauge, two fillers , no pump,no valves.
.Say you have a full tank in your normal 95 litre tank and you add 50 litres to your sub. as you draw the first 50 off your normal tank its replaced with the 50 from the sub. So your fuel gauge just reads full untill it starts to feed off the original 95 litres tank.if your sub is empty everything acts normal, gauge matchs 95 litre tank etc
if sub is full and 95 litre full i can drive for about 600 kms before gauge moves and i still have about 600 safely left, with a margin left to get more.
see i told you it sounds not simple but is! haha”
Am my correct by saying that the fuel cap allows air to be sucked in for this setup to work the fuel cap must be airtight?
Or is there other breathers involved?

Re: GQ sub tank installation options
Or do what I did, got a GU sub tank from Dawid and had it fitted so there is 40L additional diesel under the vehicle.
With the 120L long range I have 160L of diesel.
Had it done, but seems fairly straight forward.
Tank came with its bash plate and it fitted in perfectly driver side back. Put in a 12V pump with filter and connected to main inlet. I wanted a separate filler for the spare tank and that is something I would not be able to do.
If you do have some extra cash to burn you can get a good panel beater to actually fit the GU filler which has the two intakes, that is first prize but comes with a price tag.
I don't have a fuel gage on the second tank but to me it is the same as 2 jerries', if you filled it up before a trip there is 40L .... pump it over and bob's your uncle.
2. Ben het by my GQ se inlet vir my 'n ekstra gat "gemaak" so ek kan my sub tenk appart vol maak.
3. As jy by een inlet wil bly sit jy T stuk so hoog moontlik in jou hoof inlet, dus as jy vol maak, maak die hooftenk eerste vol en soos die diesel dan in die pyp is loop dit by die T stuk in na die sub tenk - ek hoop dit maak sin
Die pompie wat insit (skakelaar by dash) pomp dan die sub tenk by T stuk na hooftenk.
Anders bel my as dit sal help met die verduideliking.
Ek sal probeer onthou om more fotos op te sit, nie seker of jy egter die koneksie sal kan sien, wel die sub tenk en my 2de gat

Re: GQ sub tank installation options
Dis baie better as die koste van 'n aftermarket tenk....
Die enigste probleem is dat hulle relatief klein is...40l is maar min. Die self ontwerpte stainless subtenk wat ek in my GQ gesit het was 65l....

Re: GQ sub tank installation options
Lyk nie of daar veel plek vir sub tank is nie...sun tank is seker nie baie “diep” nie.
