Unique Off-road Concepts -

These guys have developed a local portal axle for landcruisers & gearing upgrades for Unimogs.
The have been featured on ignition & are currently busy with a 6X6 portal project.
They are wanting to get into the Patrol market & are starting with the Y62 as they have interest from Dubai.
They are looking for a local donor vehicle for the development.
Would anyone here be keen?

Y62 of y61?
Wil hulle die vol independent portal?
Ek sal my y61 vir hulle leen solank as wat hulle wil, solank hulle net hom met portals vir my terug gee, plus my old bits ook...

More money in Y62 market in Middle East.
Portals for Y61 are available from Australia, but were R200k - R300k when I enquired.
Would be awesome if they did one for a Y61. There is also a big Y61 market in the Middle East.

Forgive my ignorance but at that price is there even any way to justify that product other than the fact that it "looks lekker"?
Unless you are building a a special vehicle to tackle very specific types of tracks? Like a competition vehicle.... for a touring vehicle it's not practical in my mind and may leave you stranded if it goes wrong. Maybe I dont know enough about them but yus thats alot of money

Howzit
Ive been keeping tabs on portal axles for the last 2 years and they are picking up in popularity in the Australian market and the middle east.
The tech has been around much longer in commercial and military applications, but has started making it's way into passenger vehicles now. The real military HUMVEE came out with portals.
Portal axles are the better solution when you want a very high degree of ground clearance without the problems associated with very tall suspension lifts, very big tires, etc.
If you don't use portal axles then you run into problems with the gearing in your power train, braking is degraded due to the much larger wheels, all suspension links need to upgraded and the list goes on.
My brother-in-law wanted to upgrade his LC 79 to 37" tires and spoke to a guy in Namibia who did it properly and it cost him between R80k-R100k. So if you look at it that way you are actually paying about R150k more for the portal axle and you are getting benefits from the setup that you would not be able to buy if you went the non portal way.
So, yes if you are happy with a 2" lift then portals is not the way to go, but if you are the guy doing some tough tracks that demand the clearance, but you don't want a competition truck then portals are an option to consider.
Cheers
H
