Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Really want to get the spare of the barn door. I've now done all the settings and the barn door rattle is back again. Obviously due to bigger size tire on the door which adds more weight than what it was designed for.

I was looking at a rear bumper with swing arm but they are costly - especially if that is the only purpose I want it for. Roof rack with access ladder still cheaper than the bumper and swing arm

Considering to rather spend that money on a roof rack and move the spare to the roof rack - at least I will get more use out of the roof rack than the bumper.

Anyone else doing this?
The barn door will look a bit empty without a tire. any clever ideas to fill this space?

I think Tijmem has his spare on the rack, it can be done, but the increased height makes some entrances & parking lots a problem. It will also make you more top heavy than before.

I would investigate a towbar mounted carrier I know IanT has had successful miles with one on his landy.

Cant say I agree with you there Tinus, had one on the back of my D4 for 2 years no rattels and I drove some really bad corrugated roads

Disco Rim/Tyre combo may be considerably lighter than that of typical patrol rim/tyre , perhaps thats why it worked so well on the disco.

In regard to rear door shaking/squeak, it is improved radically with rear wheel off. However, roof mount is terrible. Weight up top, and trying to get it up or down is a nightmare. The only real way to do it properly, once, is a rear bar and swing away, unfortunately.

The patrol wheel and rim is big and heavy life with it on rear door or get a real swing arm i had a look at some of the plans.....its not for me . I think a person must do it properly , or just buget until you can .

What size tyres do you have?

I have 33s on the 4.8, and so the spare still fits on the door. I have my ups and downs with that door as well, Ive been through the rattling phase, which almost drove me to setting the car on fire, until Iandvl recommended I wrap some insulation tape around the door latch loop thingys. Instantly fixed. No more rattles.
I do however have an issue thats cropped up at the moment where I just cant get the larger door to latch on the top latch, so the rattle is back, and the open door sign flashing on the dash. No fiddling with that striker thing will work either.

On my diesel I have 35s, so the spare doesnt fit on the door. Ive strapped the spare in the back of the car now. Obviously lost lots of space, but its manageable.
And I think it looks cooler with nothing on the rear door too (I removed the bracket completely).

I have one of those Tauro thingy's lying in my garage. I used it for a while but it wasn't compatible with my trailer, so I took it off and went with a bumper with swingarm from Burnco. Let me know if you want to give it a try.
