New to the forum and need advice
Hey guys new to the forum and need some help. I currently drive a ranger 2.2 4x4. I'm thinking of selling it and buying a patrol. This will be my daily plus Overlanding rig with a trip of about 4 weeks once a year.
I do quite abit of millage so I think a diesel will be the best option. Budget is around 230k.
How reliable are the diesels?
What milage could I expect before major work?
Thanks zane

Welcome to the forum!! This is the right place to ask you Patrol related questions
This is also the right place to start looking for a diesel Patrol.
My daily drive, family, holiday, working on overlanding drive is a TD42, bought it non-aspirated and did an intercooler turbo conversion on it by Michael Steyn, who is the TD42 boffin. And you will see there are a number of guys on here that use (some abuse...) their diesel Patrols on a daily basis. Just ensure you change the oil every 5k kms and use the oil prescribed by those on here that knows more than me.
So happy hunting, your Patrol will find you.
One life, live it to the fullest!!

Welcome to the Forum !!
I drive a TD42 diesel, and love it. It's my daily drive too. Although the diesel is more fuel efficient than a Petrol Patrol, in my case I do a lot of short distance driving as I work 7km from home, and the stop start driving causes the the diesel to not be as efficient as out on the open road.
If the running costs are not an issue, which shouldn't be as a Patrol is not purchased for efficiency....... ever, then I think you will be able to get hold of a very nice TD42 well within your budget figure. You could possibly even keep the Patrol and Ranger, but you probably will never want to drive the Ranger after being in control of a Patrol.

Welcome Zane!
TD42 great as mentioned above, but also many fans of the 3l. There are a few grenade years that the experts believe you should avoid ... and hopefully the forum gurus will assist...
happy hunting

Re: New to the forum and need advice
Yeah, that is true. The 3.0L diesel is quite a beast. One just needs to find the right one that has been well looked after. There are many 3.0L doing well with high mileage.

Re: New to the forum and need advice
Welcome Welcome My son has the Ranger 2.2, must say I am very impressed with it. The patrol and the ranger are very very different, the patrol is a massive vehical, so I would think carefully before buying one as your daily drive. What sort or driving do you do, are you like Cedric and just drive from home to the office, or do you run around in it all day?, petrol or diesel they are not cheap to run. If it is the later I would agree with Cedric, keep your ranger for that and buy a 4.5 patrol (some realy good prices at the moment) and use it on weekends and for overlanding.

Thanks for the replies so far. I commute 50km one way to work and 50km back. But it's mostly highway driving. The ranger needs to go. It's starting to give problems.
I would need to finance the trol so it cannot be to old. Iv seen a couple 3.0 that fall within my budget.

Re: New to the forum and need advice
Highway travelling (as long as the traffic flows) with a Patrol is a dream
Inner city stop start not so lekker
The older ZD30Di will give you average 7.8-8.3km/l
The newer ZD30CRD 8.5-9.0km/l, depending on your right foot
You do not need a Patrol that is laden with accessories - the less added stuff the better
(Don't go lifting 75mm and do 35inch MT tyres - then you will pay big time at the pump)

The best person to chat with if you are looking to get a Patrol diesel or petrol is Tinus, he has contacts and knows people that are selling. Plus he knows most of the car's history as well.
