What is the typical life span of an un modded 4.8l engine , at which point do you loose performance?
Thanks,
Newbie, might be a patrol owner soon

I do not think you will get anyone who can qualify your questions. However, look at the UN specs for Patrol and their requirements for vehicles. They rate the 4.8 as a 600000km engine. It is my opinion that a engine will last as long as a good care program that supports the specific engine. That does not only include services with agents, but specific care by the owner/driver.

It's probably a case of how long is a piece of string.
But you can rest assured that the TB48DE engine is probably one of the most bullet proof petrol engines available today in any 4x4 on the SA market, or for that matter anywhere in the world.
Properly cared for it will last for many many kilo's and years.
Go for it!

Ja, I would guess that 500 000 - 600 000km would be no problem as long as you service regularly (with good quality oil), and don`t thrash the pants off it every time you get behind the wheel. Its a big motor with plenty of power so for "normal" usage its not particularly highly stressed.

I bought mine new in 2006, i have done 180 000km since, of which about 20000km was severe desert driving in the Empty Quarter, take the dunes in Atlantis and multiply it by about 20 and it still performs the same as new.
