Been thinking about this for the last day or so.

I am not sure the concept of coating a particle of rust in some lubricant is "good enough". for particles, i much prefer the concept of fitting a better/finer filter.

But I am not sure just fitting a better filter solves all the issues either...

That's diesel and in Aus. What do you think is happening to our cars with our local petrol and diesel.

Besides Architecture, I also am involved in bulk diesel, so I know what happens out there, and it's scary.

It depends on from where you buy, and from whom you buy. Recently with the national diesel shortage there was LOADS of funny stuff going on with pirate diesel. This type of diesel is HIGHLY illegal as there was no tax paid on it, or it is stolen diesel. You will not believe the amount of pirate diesel and stolen diesel is out there. If you get caught with it your life will expire cause SARS will clean you out, besides the theft charges (Government hates competition). The problem with this diesel is that there is nobody regulating what goes into it. So the flash points are way lower probably due to loads of paraffin added.

Our diesel depot tests every tanker load that comes in for quite a huge range of quality issues, actually we were one of only a handful of depots that actually passed the regulations standards. Sadly very often if you find cheap diesel from somewhere, there is a fairly good chance that it is from suspect sources. Also the quality of the tankers that bring the diesel in plays a huge roll in what gets put into your tank. The quality of the bulk storage tanks where the tankers fill up from is the next area of question. Then from what level in the storage tanks is the tanker getting filled from ( bottom of the tank ).

NATREF and the Coastal refineries will have quality control, but if diesel is being brought in via Bots or Nam or Moz, then who knows. Sadly all our diesel is being driven up by tanker from the coast and NATREF is unable to supply, so it takes a long time and Km driving in a tanker that may not be in great condition due to to subcontracting loads out to transport companies, purely due to lack of diesel inland.

In a nutshell, buy from a reputable supplier or garage, and you should be ok

Interesting and scary Cedric.

Thank you for sharing Malcolm. Love the 4WD 24-7 adventures!

On a lighter note, the chemist that makes a photo appearance later in the vid could slot right into a Breaking Bad episode ;-)
