Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

So I am in the market for some sand ladders (or whatever the name is). So I have looked at a number of brands and watched a crap load of YouTube . So decided to ask you guys, as you all have more experience than me in this regard.

I’ve looked at pioneer (affordable but people say slippery when wet (mwhahahahahaha). TRED pro (a lot pricier but excellent reviews and a lifetime guarantee ). Camel trax (very affordable and made from fibre glass composite . The same as the badger recovery tracks on 4x4direct). And then trailboss (not as expensive as the TRED . But those little nubbins/nipples has a way of grounding down).

So which ones do you use? I am not really in the market for a winch (although it would look COOL), cause I don’t want to add extra weight, and won’t use it nearly as much to warrant the expense. On the other hand , none of my pauper buddies have a winch).

So what is the Patrol favourite?

There are scenarios where you need to get yourself out of a sticky situations, other times you have friends to help.

1stly I would invest in a shovel, I've got 2 - one folds up, nice for around camp and some digging. My other shovel is 1.9m tall (diy), diffs are deep when sand is hot (not ghandis words).

Basically the only other option for you would either be a hand winch or sand ladders.

I personally don't lend mine out at all, they are very expensive and when the adrenaline is pumping nobody has mechanical sympathy.

Some things to consider besides price.
Where do you want to store then pre- and post-use. If space is limited look at the length and width and even stacked height.
I think Opposite Lock has short ladders ~ 500mm(?).

If they are going to live permanently outside on your vehicle, look for one's that are UV stabilised, otherwise they just become brittle and can give you a sidewall puncture.

These days here by us some people have moved to a different setup - that seems to work very nicely. They are called trac-grabbers. They are way more compact and can be used as a wheel chock. They are obviously useless when one needs to create a "bridge". They also don't seem to harm your rim.

The "bleepin Jeep" youtube guys tested those things, and they were really not impressive by any means.


Must say that watching the Aussie guys, I would save up and get genuine Maxtrax. I have seen a few tests between the various makes, and the Maxtrax are far superior to the others. Just so darn expensive.

Frontrunner asking R4850 and Tactical Distributors asking R4400. But I believe you need to watch out for Tactical. If they don't have in stock, and you can take it with you when you pay, don't give them your money before you have the goods in your hands.

Unfortunately, noby in SA seem to have the new Maxtrax with the steel studs. They all have the older plastic stud type.

Yes David I'm with you with regards to the grabbers - weirdly enough it's Jeeps that use them here. Just a disclaimer- the product the use does look a bit different. I don't have any firsthand experience though, so I'm staying open minded.

But with the maxtrax (genuine) I have decent experience - worth their weight in gold. They stack very well, and because their teeth are in offset directions it scrapes the clay off nicely. They can take a lot of weight as well. They also don't become brittle. They are actually very useful for a variety of applications. Some people have replaced the melted protrusions by drilling holes through them and putting rugby studs through. It does affect the grip and stacking though.

Wish I could find the new maxtrax in blood red to match the patrol.

A set of 4 might cost you more than an Aussie front locker.

Have you looked at TRED pro ? R3400 at securetech. Pretty impressive recovery tracks those
