Roof console

This is on my wish list to do.....

Seen this informative thread on the Aussie site, with some descriptive photo's as well. Starting to think about it and mull it around in my head.... wish i had CAD drawing free ware or something similar to play with..... May start with carton to get the lining and alignment right...

One consideration I am cautious about is weight,,,, they use 7mm plywood, I am not sure what that may weigh in the end and if the console will not be too heavy....

A very quick calculation indicates that that much plywood (but excluding all the brackets and so forth) should weigh less than half a kilo.

Thx Peter, will start playing around with carton as indicated, will post updates here as I go along...

Thought for now to be included in the console:
  • Kenwood dual band radio face
  • LED lights to light up the front driver and passenger area (My Patrol only have the light in the center)
  • Replace center light with a decent LED light
  • At the back of the console to have a cigarette lighter plug and USB plugs
  • Cigarette lighter plug and USB plugs at the front somewhere, cigarette lighter will be used to provide power to a dashcam I intend to get
  • Small speaker or two for the dual band radio sound
  • Place to store sunglasses or something
In addition, perhaps a switches to operate LED flood lights on both sides of the vehicle I intend to add once i have a roof rack...

So all still in planning, will see in the end what I can do and what I cannot do...

One one of Andrew St Pierre White's cruisers they added a shelf across the roof just behind the sun visor.

Looked like very handy srorage, just not sure if our roofs are high enough.

I have seen it, and his is big enough for a laptop on the passenger side, with an inverter to charge the laptop, and on the driver side he charge his camera batteries, both with 12V and through an inverter. I have not yet looked at the GU Patrol roof line to see if that is an option.

Some of the local landcruiser guys moulded a similar design, could check their forum. works well if you don't have a sunroof ;-)

I had a look last night when i drove home from work, one can make a unit to sit at the top of the sun visors, however, one would have to modify the roof liner to allow that and I am not sure I want to do that as my patrol's roof liner still looks new....
I also then remembered that Andrew St Pierre White fitted a whole new Alu Cab roof that incorporate his tent for accessing from the inside of his cruiser, which i think give him the extra space for such a fitment.
