I was pulling your leg. These are vehicles that are available in other markets but not SA so we are forced to take older model vehicles and modify them ourselves.... Pity they have the attitude that we must just accept what they offer us.... I suspect that the 2 vehicles that I referred to would outsell the 3.0 D by quite a bit.

4,8 LT engine old and way down on performance. 3.0lt Diesel a little lig in die broek. 4,2 diesel way to old and inefficient. ( Loved mine, sorry, Dirk's but man the new diesels are a step ahead) My Ford ( SAC tuning) is an absolute monster.

What nissan patrol bakkie needs is a 200 kw 700 Nm diesel and the current V8 petrol doing duty in the new Patrol SUV.

The newer vehicles both petrol and diesel are more fuel efficient, better on road, have more power for size etc etc but are you really going to take one to the CKGR solo? Somehow I don't think so unless you have a deathwish or satellite phone, laptop, various cables to plug in, spare electronics etc etc....

I would rather live with the older technology that is unlikely to break and if it should can be fixed with 2 spanners and a piece of bloudraad.

The Ford may be a monster but don't all the fire extinguishers you have to carry weigh it down and affect fuel consumption?

The fastest SUV in the world is a turbo charged TB48 Patrol SUV.


If that is "way down on performance", I am at a loss...

But yes, very much Old school. The same goes for the TB42.

"Old school" means a number of things though...
It is inefficient, yes, but it is also over-designed.
That means you can play with it, without breaking it. The same goes for the drive train and chassis.
No other factory car can handle 1000hp through the drive train without modifications (except for a handful of "hyper cars" that literally cost 20 times the price of an old school Patrol.

Whether you like "Old school" or not, is a personal choice. But you have to admit, there is more to it than just passion. There is logic to it as well.

But perhaps more pointedly, loving old school 4x4s is kind of part of what this particular forum has been all about.

Saying you don't like it, is a bit like going onto a Beatles fan site, and say that you prefer Taylor Swift....

I'm getting scared now. Scared about how old I'm getting.

When I bought my first car, a brand-new Ferrari 348 was less than half that price...

Imho i like old school 250000 km since Michael build my 4.2 td engine and i have broken a fanbelt so far ...best drive train in the world ....i load 40 bags cement nearly every week thats 2 ton
If all else fails i can put power on the solenoid and drive home ..once my battery came loose and got cut by powersteering pump ....loosen the cut off solenoid started it down a hill and stopped it at home against a tree in 4th gear after driving home from bella bella with no battery .
When traveling all over Africa that's what i want.been using chip oil for the last 25000 km no problem .my bakkie makes 400nm and 100kw on rear wheels ... more than i need thats pretty good for a mild tune for a engine designed in 1941
On the river trip i saw chris ford go to 2km per liter in the sand ...if that works for you drive it but for me old school is cool....mabe if what you spent on what you drive doesn't matter more people will drive patrols
