Just for fun - costs for a 4.2 td conversion on a GU

With all this talk lately on the 4.2 turbo diesels, as well as me watching a lot of Ausie 4x4 YouTube shows with brilliant 4.2 diesel GUs, I’ve been wondering, just for fun for now, how easy would it be and what kind of costs involved if we could find a really buggered GU, maybe something like a popped 3.0l, or maybe a finished 4.5? I dunno, and then put in a new/refurbed 4.2 and have Michael breath on it.

So, first of all, what GU do we look for? Would it be easier to convert a 3.0l or 4.5?
Whatever the vehicle is, I would guess spend no more than R70k. Maybe less to make the whole conversion ‘affordable’.
Then the actual motor and conversion - what numbers are we looking at?

I’m not even including a standard 4.2 gu into this discussion as they seem to be hens teeth.

Graham, I have done two 3.0 to 4.2TD conversions and you are looking around R95,000 for this conversion.

This includes a brand new from top to bottom balanced TD42 turbo engine with front mount intercooler, 76mm exhaust, Madman and everything ellse needed.

Ok, interesting, thanks Michael.

And then what’s easier to convert? A 3.0, or 4.5? Or doesn’t it really matter?

I have not converted from a 4.5 before, but it does not seem to bad from what I have seen.

4.5 engine mounting points are already in the correct place so no grinding and welding needed
