What is this doo-hickey?

I know this question is probably proof beyond a doubt that I am an idiot. But I am not nearly the 4x4 expert no one believes I am. I noticed that when I took the "trollie" for a wheel alignment and balancing that the lovely little wheel caps on with the Nissan badge on the front wheels were missing. Hissing under my breath at the dealer trying to screw me over again, I went to inspect some further.
And low and behold, I saw that there is word written on it: "Lock"" and "Auto". Now I know the patrol has a rear diff lock (it does have a rear diff lock right?)? And has a nice button on the dash to proof it. But yes, what is it that is on the front axle of my patrol? And what is the function (see attachment)

When you put in 4x4 and the hub in in auto the hub will lock the wheel to the drive shaft so you can go forward in 4x4 . When going forward and backwards a lot like when you drive rocks rather lock them manually other wise it locks and disconnect every time you change direction....hope it makes sense

Yes it does. Is it aftermarket or standard on the patrol?
Thanks for the help, now I am also in the know

David ................waar is jy ?
Groete
Pieter

Now I just have to hope that the guy that had the trolly before me did not check the spanned, else I’ll have to buy a new one (or cheap equivalent). Will have to check the little black bag in the back

Klink my jy het die idee. As jy die voertuig in 4x4 wil gebruik, moet jy die hubs gaan lock met die wiel spanner.

I had no idea about this! When I have done trails I just sommer selected 4L, hear the small click that the wheels have engaged and gone for it.
I never knew I needed to lock the hubs manually??
