Prices for Distributor Cap, Plug leads & Rotor

Post by Mike Meyer »

Hi Guys
My 95 4.2 SGL is suffering from a misfire. Sometimes worse than others. Sometimes runs like a dream.(Done 182000km only)
I'm using the Pertronix Ignitor 1762LSCC electronic ignition from Offshore Marine and a Bosch coil. Plugs have been replaced.

The Stealers have quoted me : Distributor Cap R1021. Plug Leads R 1786 and Rotor R 556 all PLUS VAT.

I'll happily pay if this will fix the problem.
Does anyone have any other suggestions before I spend my money.

At least two of these items can be tested instead of just being replaced on the off chance that it might be the problem.

Om te meet is om te weet.

I am pulling this old thread up. I also got very slight misfires, really not bad but they are present.
My fuel in the tank is quite old so I'll see if refueling will change something.
But: my distributor rotor definitely is quite old. I replaced the cap after buying the car which now ran about 80000km since then.
The rotor hasn't been replaced by me so it will be quite a bit older.

I am sure the rotor should have been replaced already anyhow and I'll order one now. But can anyone tell me how long cap and rotor normally run before they should be replaced?

In my personal experience caps and rotors last a long time unless something else is wrong causing excessive arcing or the break due to an accident.

They are not precision components and don't control the timing. Are you sure the problem is not with the timing module (I believe this can be tested using an osciloscope) or mechanical wear on the shafts and advance mechanism?
