New Patrol Bakkie - First Impressions

Hi all......
I arrived South Africa on Wednesday and had my new (to me) bakkie delivered to me same day by previous owner.
Ive since driven around 600km's and i must say that im a very happy chap.
My one concern was that it may lack a bit of power, but i do like the characteristics of a big diesel and the torque seems to peak just where its needed for tar road driving.
There is also loads of low down pull for chugging along on dirt roads..
The bakkie is currently fitted with new TJM XGS shocks, and the ride is great on corrugations but maybe slightly harsh on the tar. Not so much that it is a concern though.

I spent yesterday driving to Pretoria to some mods done, but will cover that in my other Patrol mods thread.

At the end of the day i bought the Patrol as a keeper and im now looking forward to many more kms over the coming years.
I tend to average around 6k kms per year so it should probably see me out

Excellent.
These bakkies are very comfortable to drive, even on the long road.
The power issue will get sorted easily.

Congrats on your new Patrol !!!!

Before you do ANY fiddling with the fueling and boost, get an EGT gauge fitted withthe sensor probe as close to the engine side of the manifold as possible. Once you have done that you can play around with the boost and fueling without burning holes through pistons. These motors are tough and robust but if you abuse the turbo and boost you can land up with shhhhh..... ummmm.....issues.

These motors can handle comfortably 1 bar boost, but the problem is that the diesel pump cannot really deliver the amount of fuel needed to run at the boost. On 0.8 bar boost, I think the pumps we have can deliver sufficient diesel to achieve great power. You will probably spin the wheels up to third if you do have a dice with a Cruiser bakkie.....hahahaha

I think Boksburg SCA will be able to get that setup done right for you and may also be able to fit egt gauge

Thx for the advice Ricster......
Bakkie is now with SAC Boksburg.
They are replacing exhaust, tuning fuel pump, and will fit a Madman system to monitor egt, oil pressure and coolant temps.
It will definitely be interesting to compare before and after dyno results and also to feel difference on the road.
Cant wait for the drive home tomorrow.
