Petrol smell when 4x4

Hi all, recently returned from Richtersveld trip. Is it normal to experience petrol smell - happened all five days. The temperature was between 37 and 46 degrees, could this be a reason and all the 4x4'ing over the rocks, etc?

The pattern was in the beginning of engaging with 4x4 travel and then for the first 40 minutes I used to have the smell of petrol coming into the vehicle. Opened the petrol caps a few times and it sounded like a lot of petrol fumes escaped.

Is this normal?

Herman,
Search on this forum for boiling petrol or boiling fuel.
My first suspicion would be that it is the tank breather that is routed out into the left front fender just behind the left front indicator.
In very high heat conditions there are allot of fumes expelled and these fumes is drawn into the cabin.
Hope this is of some help.
Riaan

I have had exactly the same symptons.
Only when hot outside - and outward pressure when opening the fuel cap.
The breather having a blockage is likely but will have it checked out on next visit to Graham.

Die ander probleem kan wees dat die petrol pomp om die tenk se skroewe los is of die o-ring tussen die pomp se plaat en die tenk stukkend is - ek het myne al met gom gesmeer en vas gedraai en nou ruik ek niks petrol meer nie.

Recently heard of wrapping the exhaust in ceramic to hugely reduce the heat. Any views or previous threads on this?

I would only use that on selected areas where you may have a concern of proximity to other areas such as the tanks and not otherwise.
The coating does not really "reduce" the heat, it only confines it.
The heat remains in the exhaust, and because it cannot exchange the heat with its surroundings (due to the coating) it becomes and remains much much more hotter.

So much so that I have heard people complaining that they can actually see the exhaust pipe glowing in places where the coating may not be complete. That does not sound safe to me.
I therefore do not think that the lifespan of the exhaust is helped along by this either.
