Good day to all you Patrol owners. My other great hobby is deep sea ski boat fishing and I tow a fairly heavy boat (3.2 tons). Although the Defender gets the job done, I do not feel comfortable over working the TD5 turbo particularly on the hills, and have come to the realization that I need something with enough power to haul the boat with ease. Unfortunately there are very few vehicles that are licensed to pull 3.5 tons but the Patrol is one of them. In addition it is a great riding "car" and very, very capable offroad. I have not heard of any "usual" problems with the Patrol and having owned a Hardbody DC before, I am confident with the brand. I realise that with the power comes a bigger fuel bill, but hey, it can't be any worse that the 50 litres per hour of the boat : :surprised:
So, I am here to listen to you experts and to find out if you know of any reasonable Patrol station wagons for sale. I guess I am looking at the 4.5 or 4.8, preferably auto. 250,000 k's is not an issue for me as long as she is mechanically sound.

Welcome Tony,

I'm no soothsayer, but it sounds like there might be a 4.8 in your future!

Chris Skinner also tows a sizable boat, I'm sure he'll be able to give you some advice.

Welcome Tony.

Go straight for the 4.8. At the prices they have been going for recently, they are the bargain of the century!

   Oom Mac, I should have known I'd find you here, great to make contact again, you must have dug that picture out of the archives. Thanks for the welcome guys. I have absolutely decided on the Patrol 4.8, it is the most sensible vehicle for my needs. All that is left is to find a nice one.

Welcome mate.

Just from reading your intended use, i would also say without doubt that the TB48 (4.8lt 6 cylinder) petrol is the way to go. The manuals are harder to find but equally as potent.

I wish i had a valid reason to own a 4.8 but alas, my work dictates the 4.2D be my chariot.

Welcome and enjoy!

Hunting on the www, it seems there are a few 4.5 petrol Patrols around, is there a whole lot of difference between the 4.5 and 4.8?
