Diesel Trol 12V or 24V ?

Once again please pardon my lack of knowledge. I bought a 96 Patrol a few months ago that came out as a 4.2 P but was converted to the 4.2 Diesel (TD42) by the previous owner.
I noted that it has two batteries but what was strange to me is that the two batteries are connected in "series". Does this mean that my Trol has a 24V electrical system ? or does it has something to do with the diesel pump ? or is there perhaps another explanation ?
I have to mention again, I really enjoy the drive once I have adjusted to the laziness of the non-turbo diesel. It really has "character".

Ek is seker dit was al voorheen op hierdie forum oor daardie engine wat die starter ook 24V nodig het.

I think its a truck motor that is put in there so they use 24 for starter diesel feul solinoid ect and just 12v for the rest?

Dankie Tinus.

Hi Phillip

These big diesel need two kidneys / sorry oil filters to keep the oil clean, but even with two the oil needs to be changed every 5000 km.

Congratulations on a very reliable motor? As Cedric Greg, christo and I say " real trucks do not have spark plugs"

Oh yes.... and you can't beet cubic inch diesel power...( even without a turbo...   )

I have also heard this before that a Patrol is running 24V and not 12V. If the batteries are in series then I assume your alternator is 24V, and you starter too, with the rest of the electronics.... the little that there is in these machines will be running off 12V

I was told a long time back that the TD42 motor was used in many applications... from forklifts to light trucks explaining the possible 24V application and of course in Patrols, how true regarding the forklifts, I don't know but you can't get a tougher motor than a TD42.

Use a multimeter to measure voltage between alternator output and earth, that should tell you?
