Is it sensible to convert a 3l diesel to a 4.2 diesel engine?

ABSOLUTELY!!.... haha ... Mine is a 4.2 diesel turbo, and love the fresh smell of diesel in the morning.

The only problem is finding a TD42 motor, they are a bit scarce. The advantage is that there is NO electronics, just put power to the diesel pump and off you go.

For sure, I should have done it years ago. I did it, the best thing I ever did. If you get a TD42 make sure you get the bell housing as well . All you need is two engine mounting the bell housing a pair of pliers to get rid of all the 3L wires en electrics , a cable tie or two to tie all your sensors in a bundle and off you go.

Serious its not an difficult conversion and its worth it. I think the UD40 engine with the Turbo will be a nice motor to have or look for a slightly bent bakkie with a TDI will also make a nice conversion. My motor came from a 2007 bakkie. no turbo.

Do you need to change the gearbox and transfer case as well from the 3l to the 4.2l. The reason why I want to know is that I am looking for a very reliable engine that does not need to be performance driven to tow a horsebox. I don't want to sit and worry when my wife drives the vehicle with the horsebox in my absence. I grew up with Patrols and I must say I always felt safe, a feeling I have not experienced in any other vehicle.

Only the bellhousing, I believe

The 3L Gearbox stays. Like peter says only the bellhousing for the starter. You would use the 4,2 starter. I tow a WJ PZazz just fine with my . I'll put the wife in the back next time maybe I can comment better?

Do you tow that Pzazz with the 4.2 non-turbo diesel ? I am interested because I bought my Patrol 4.2 diesel (non-turbo) to tow my boat from time to time. Not a huge boat but I might go somewhat bigger. Mine is actually originally a 1996 4.2 petrol but had the transplant to 4.2 diesel some time before I bought it. I love the vehicle but ,as I have posted on another thread, it is very lazy but I have not towed the boat as yet. I am not a fast tower but can one get to about 90/100 km/hr on the open road ? I have realised that the uphills would take a lot of patience. Regards.

I own a 2007 4.2D (Normally aspirated diesel) . Whilst it will tow a trailer full of cattle around a farm no problems, it will battle in the open road trying to tow a large ski boat or the like.

I have towed a relatively small rubber duck and motor, without any issues, and managed to maintain fair cruising speed that was safe as well, however,this vehicle (or motor should i say), is just not a great tow motor for long distance towing (ie: Motorways etc)

Sometimes i throw on the 3m refuse trailer and load up fairly heavy, and it drags that thing around town no problems, highways etc no worries, but it certainly isn't a ski boat or caravan...thats a different story.

I feel that owners wishing to use this motor in such a way will be very very very frustrated in the end. As it is the 4.2 is lazy, but strong, adding to this a heavy load and trailer and it makes for a long stressful day in the saddle.

Just my opinion.

If anyone wishes to try the 4.2 they are welcome to drive mine and see how they like it. I live in CT.
