problems with fuel consumption

Hi there,
I am new in the block and a relatively greenhornish Patrol owner (2001, 4.5l petrol, injection).
Recently my fuel consumption suddenly shot through the roof (normally 6 to 7 l, now between 4 and 5)
and the idling is inconsistent (should be 900, but goes up to 1300 even if engine is warm).
I took it to my mechanic (Auto Rosen, Strydom Park) but he doesn't know what to do.
Does anybody have an idea what the problem could be?
Any advise would be most appreciated.
Johannes

Hi Johannes,

I know a few 4.5 patrols and they all get between 4 and 5 kilos to the liter. Some say the 4.5 on the side is the consumption. I never get over 4.5 but I do have 33 muddies and extras adding weight. Maybe start with cleaning sensors etc and changing the fuel filter.

In town I get between 4.3 and 4.7k/l

On the open road is is normally around 5.5k/l.

When I did my Botswana holiday trip the average was 4.8k/l

Thanks caz,
Its not really encouraging, though. But my consumption was decisively lower until a couple of weeks ago. When I went down to Durban once I even got almost 8km out of a liter... I will try the sensors and filter etc.
Best, Johannes

Thanks for the reply, Herrie.
It's just that the consumption increased quite dramatically recently. It dropped from around 5km/l to below 4km/l in town. And there is this
thing with the revving as well. It's very inconsistent, goes up to 1400 sometimes, independent of temperature. So, there must be s.th. wrong.
Do you live in Gauteng? Do you have a good mechanic? Do you know whether SAC (many branches, one in Kyalami) is any good?
Best,
Johannes

I think the best will be to contact Graham Cumming to sort out your problems - he is in Centurion.

Thanks Herrie,

I heard this name now many times. He seems to be great. Do you have personal experiences with him?

I have not taken my Patrol to him yet because I have no problems with my Patrol.

Hay guys, you must all have lead in your right foot! Only joking! I have only done about 1000km in my "new" Troll (2001 4500 GL) but I am also getting about 6-7 KM per L yes I admit I drive like a granny but this is also town driving. Maybe I have a strong tail wind behind me??? The guy that I bought it from (old retired swiss guy) also told me he was getting about 13L/100km but his was a lot of open road driving

Hi Ian,
6-7km sounds right. That's what I got before. It's just that it suddenly dropped to around 4 and than there is this revving problem. So I do think that s.th. needs to be fixed.

Johannes

PS: I am almost Swiss (Southern German) and at least with the "troll" I am also driving like a granny. It's just that I don't get the tailwinds
