Dastek Chip in my GRX

I took my GRX for a chip on Monday.
There is a increase of 20 B.H.P. (15kW) on the wheels.
I will see if there is any changes in the fuel consumptsion.

Hi Lunar, did you do just the chip or exhaust as well?
Any noticeable difference on the road?
What did it set you back?
You say 15kw on the rear wheels. What is the KW on the wheels now? (Nice playing with the figures)
Would be very interested in consumption changes if any.
What is your current average consumption?

Morning guys. I have heard a chip in the 4.8 is not a good idea!

Saltman can tell you more.

Had mine tested at Koos Swanepoel Developments and cost R150.00 for a dry run.
Maximum torque on back wheels at 3933rpm was 342Nm.
Maximun Kw on the back wheels was 161Kw
This is very standard for the 4.8 The standard cruisers 4.5EFI's weigh in at the same torque(+-6Nm less) but the Kw is +-30Kw less.
If you chip the two vechiles the differences stay the same. More or less same Nm's and Kw +-30kw differance.
The patrol's Kw will go up to +- 180Kw and 375Nm's on the wheels.(max)

Hallo G-Man I am a U-chip dealer without a dyno.Koos Swanepoel has my old dyno.I kept the dealership.Anyway I have chiped many cars and the chip does work on a 4.8.The only problem is you like the power and use it,then the consumption stay the same, but you have more power.I phoned a friend of me this morning after I red your post to ask his consumption(I did his chip a wile ago)He said it went from 6kml to 6.6kml.Towing his trailor he get 5.8kml.He travel about 130kmh,he said.

Thanks Frans, interesting though that the Patrol RWNM is so close to the Cruisers whereas there is a big difference on flywheel NM. 425 for Patrol and 387 for Cruiser.
Does your friend have a manual or auto?
Are the RWKW just with the chip or chip and exhaust?

Hi Frans
Maybe you can enlighten us.
From a reliable source I have been told that on the 4.5 / 4.8 to do the exhaust and then have the combination dyno tested and tuned, but NOT to chip.
The reason I was given is that to get the additional power and economy, the engine setup is leaned out.
Apparently this is fine for general use, but as soon as you load it up / add a trailer etc AND then use that power (for example up a mountain pass or continued high speed travelling), the operating temps in the cylinder head / exhaust rise to the danger point. There is a real danger that over long term use (I was quoted a figure of approx 50 000km), the exhaust manifold will crack or you will end up with cylinder head damage. My source has seen at least 2 Patrols with damage resulting from the chipped setup.
With this type of issue I am by nature conservative and would rather err on the side of safety and go for the freeflow exhaust only and then a dyno tuning, staying within the fuel mixture parameters and not be too overly concerned with the economy side of things!
Anyone have more info / experience?

The exhaust is still standard.
I didn't feel a huge difference in the short drive from Dastek to my home. Maybe I will feel it on the open road, or when towing.
In the other hand, I never drive the Patrol “voet in die hoek” so it’s hard to feel the difference.
If it was the Bantam, it would be a different story.
Maybe the fuel consumption will be better.
The B.H.P on the dyno printout before was: 157 BHP and after were 177.8 @ 5000 rpm.
Saltman, I will like to get more info about this issue.

Hi Saltman
A unichiped car is not tuned for driving around the house, and run quick in short distance. Now the lifespan on the motor is shorter,no.To tune a 80 year old lady's car and a raceing car is exactly the same tune!A bad tuner can damage the car,but uni-chip do not have a history of enjine damage or exhaust. Most vehicles are fitted with knock sensors,so it will pull the timeing and also fitted with a lamda sensor to control the mixture. Then why fit a unichip? With the unichip you can do a lot of stuff and change the timing and fueling when the car is not in close loop with the lamda control.Any way I can carry on about the chip what it can do,the new vertion you can change a premapped map with bluetooth to speedlimed your car and so on.
