Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

I'm on the hunt for a GQ/Y60 Patrol (I would love to get a TD42, but it seems the TB42's are the ones that come up) for my old man and I'm wondering what kind of fuel consumption I should expect from the TB42 (ie 4.2 Petrol SGL) Petrol engine? The numbers for normal open road driving I've seen range from 16lph to 24lph....if you have any info please also say what sort of speeds you cruise at.

The worst open-road consumption I have ever had was driving back from Hibberdene. The car was fully loaded, roofrack was loaded, there was a heavy head-wind most of the time, I was trying to drive at 110-120 GPS speed and traffic was heavy so lots of overtaking up the pass. That got me 4km/l.

The best I get is around 6km/l. That is on Botswana trips, thus level road, car and roofrack heavily loaded and cruising restfully at 100-105GPS.

Keep in mind that I have 33" x 12.5" x 15" tires on, which probably carry a penulty of around 1km/l (some say it's even more).

I am not so sure about the penalty for the bigger wheels, with the small wheels you have two issues: The odometer records more kilometers that is actually travelled, i.e. it is optimistic and your speedometer is also optimistic, hence you are actually driving slower than what the speedo indicates. Both factors contribute, first to the perceived consumption and second to actual consumption.

After I changed to 33" my odometer is 3% conservative, or underread the true distance, but the speedometer is now less optimistic (120km/h = 112km/h) where it used to be out by 19km/h at 120km/h indicated.

The consumption for the smaller tyres, if calculated from the odometer is not real and one need to take accurate measurements (GPS) or at least try to establish an adjustment factor.

The real world figure for my 4.2 petrol did'nt change musch at all, and more concerning, driving 100 or 120 made no difference either. I get 5.5 / 18.2 in town, 6.5 / 15 open road and worst ever is about 4.3 / 23 (very bad off-road mixed 50/50 with town) and best ever 7.2 / 13.9 (open road and kruger park cruising)

My needle goes well below the red line and then I only fill up with 81 litres, which means there is still about 15 litres left, or 75km, but it just feel wrong. also it gets to a point where it does not drop any further and then it becomes a guessing game. I though of including another resistor in the circuit, but not sure how these work.

The most I ever filled up with was 94.5 litres (my company card only allows for max 95 litres) and the needle was still some 7- 10 litres from full, judging that it was at the position it usually is after 30 km of driving. The manual/specifications note a 95 litre tank.
I do not see anything wrong with the Petrol engines (consumption ± the same as the diesel engines, last just as long, more power), they use whatever you put in, leaded unleaded, 93 - 97 octane and I once drove about 40km/h on a 50/50 mix of benzine and fuel to reach a refueling point. My brother told me that if it is a high compression ratio engine it will work more efficiently with higher octane, can this be true? I have not noticed any difference between 93/95/97 octane, what is your experience?

Yip I am very lightfooted on the Petrol pedaal, worst consumption 4.2km/l towing 4x4 trailer with trailer tent en gejaag om dioe grenspos ooptekry teen 140 - 150km/h, best also 7.2 just me in vehicle travelling 100 - 110km/h. What Marnus is saying is very trueif I travel 120km/h on speedo it reads about 108 - 110km/h on GPS I use 31 X 10.5R15. I mainly use the red 95 lead replacement fuel on the coast.

My average consumption is probably 6.5km/l but I work on 6km/l then I can work easily what distance I can travel with liters in tank, when I go on holoday I work on 5km/l vehicle heavier and travelling most of the time 120 - 130km/h which is still below the GPS 120km/h. Now that I have a trailer my travelling speed will be 100 - 110km/h so I guess my consumption should be between 5 - 6km/l.

Enjoyable cruising speed for me is 120 - 125km/h on my speedo which is between 108 - 113km/h on GPS, but I have travelled long distances doing 130 - 140km/h but then you get to your destination so quickly you do not have time to enjoy your lorrie

More importantly, what is the consumption of the Fuel injection GQ's?

I only dream of 5km/l and I dont speed, never gone above 120 GPS.......

@marakasmalan: I don't think we got the fuel injected 4.2's in SA? Maybe someone on here would be able to clarify this?

Not that I think even Nissan knew what specification we had in SA, they con't even recogdnise the VIN nr....

some had fridges, some not, some had the skyline type air vent controls and some had manual levers.

christo boegman had 4.2 gq that we put in a Tb45 it is a wonderful patrollie getting 6-7 km per liter and he changed to engine at 250miles the head was a problem he gets 7-8 with 4.5
